Chapter 8 - The Oak Tree Blossoms

Spring came early to the coastal hills of Saint Jude’s Harbor.

Caleb had bought the small cottage on the cliff where Mara had spent her final years, keeping it preserved while constructing a warm, spacious family home just up the hill from the water. In the center of the lawn stood a massive, ancient oak tree whose branches reached wide against the open sky.

The grand Vance estate in the city was sold, its proceeds channeled entirely into charitable trusts. Caleb moved his permanent office to a quiet regional building nearby, choosing to spend his evenings at home, cooking dinner, helping Sadie with her reading, and listening to the ocean waves crash against the shore.

Julian had taken over as chief of security for the new foundation, frequently visiting the house for weekend barbecues, his gruff demeanor softening into that of a protective, indulgence-prone uncle for Sadie.

One Saturday afternoon, Caleb was working in the garden when he saw Sadie standing near the base of the grand oak tree.

She was holding her small gray suitcase.

Caleb stopped his work, setting his spade down on the soil. He walked over quietly, watching as Sadie unlatched the rusty buckles of the suitcase.

Inside, instead of clothes or old papers, was a collection of new treasures: smooth sea stones she had collected on the beach, drawing books filled with colorful pictures, and a framed photograph of Caleb, Mara, and Sadie that a local artist had painted from old photographs.

Sadie dug a small hole near the roots of the oak tree with a plastic shovel, placed the empty gray suitcase inside a wooden box, and carefully buried it in the earth.

"What are you doing, sweetie?" Caleb asked, kneeling down beside her in the grass.

Sadie wiped her soil-stained hands on her overalls and looked up at him with bright, clear eyes.

"Mommy said when I felt safe, I didn't need to carry the small box anymore," Sadie said softly. "The oak tree can hold it now."

Caleb pulled her close, pressing his cheek against her soft hair, feeling a warmth that flooded every dark corner of his past. "It’s safe here, Sadie. Forever."
