Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Estate

By Monday morning, news of Caleb’s sudden departure with his newly claimed daughter had leaked to the financial press. Headlines painted a chaotic picture: Vance Heir Vanishes Amidst Custody Battle, Sterling Merger in Jeopardy.
Inside the sleek glass tower of Vance Enterprises in downtown Capital City, the atmosphere was suffocating. Board members shuffled nervously through the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor, whispering behind closed doors.
At the head of the long mahogany table sat Eleanor Vance, looking pristine in a slate-gray tailored suit. Next to her was Arthur Vance, a heavy-set man with bulging eyes and sweat glistening on his temples.
"He's grandstanding," Arthur hissed to Eleanor, checking his Rolex for the third time. "He took the kid and ran to the coast. We have enough votes to invoke Section 4 of the Trust Bylaws right now. Declare him mentally incapacitated due to grief, remove him as CEO, and sign the Sterling contract before the markets close!"
"Patience, Arthur," Eleanor snapped under her breath. "Caleb is emotional, not stupid. He knows if he doesn't show up today, the trust reverts to my control automatically. He has no moves left."
At exactly nine o'clock, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Caleb walked in.
He wore a dark blue suit, his posture rigid and commanding. He didn't look tired; he looked like a man who had left his vulnerabilities behind in the fog. But what froze the room was the small, elegant silver handheld recorder sitting in his right hand—and the two uniformed state police investigators walking directly behind him.
The boardroom went dead silent.
"Caleb," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a warning register as she stood up. "What is the meaning of this theater? This is a private meeting of the executive board. Security, clear these—"
"Sit down, Eleanor," Caleb said. His voice wasn't raised, but it cut through the room like a steel wire.
Arthur stood up angrily. "You don't command this room, nephew! You've abandoned your duties, dragged a bastard child into the public eye, and wrecked our market valuation in forty-eight hours! We are voting on your removal now."
"You can vote on whatever you like, Uncle Arthur," Caleb said, walking to the head of the table and placing his hands flat on the polished wood. "But first, the board deserves to hear the audit I completed over the weekend."
He nodded to one of the investigators, who plugged a encrypted drive into the boardroom presentation system. The massive projector screens mounted on the walls flickered to life.
Instead of financial spreadsheets, Mara's hospital room appeared on the screen. The audio from Eleanor’s visit played through the high-definition speakers—crisp, cruel, and unmistakable.
"...I will ensure the child spends her upbringing in the worst institutional care this state has to offer..."
Gasps echoed around the table. Several board members leaned back in shock, looking at Eleanor with horror.
Eleanor’s face drained of all color. Her hands tightened on her fountain pen so hard her knuckles turned white. "This is a forged recording! It’s illegal—it’s inadmissible in any legal proceeding!"
"It isn't a legal trial yet, Eleanor," Caleb said coldly. "It’s a shareholder disclosure. And here is the second file."
The screen shifted, showing a paper trail of embezzled funds: over three million dollars transferred from the Vance Foundation’s charitable trust into off-shore accounts controlled by Arthur Vance—payments made specifically to bribe state adoption handlers and bribe local postal contractors to divert mail from Caleb’s former address.
Arthur’s face turned purple. "That’s... that’s a misunderstanding! It was an operational expense!"
"Operational human trafficking," the lead investigator stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Arthur Vance, Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, extortion, and grand larceny involving trust funds."
"Touch me and I will ruin every person in this room!" Eleanor screamed, dropping all pretense of elegance as the officers moved in. She glared at Caleb with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You think you've won, Caleb? You think that little girl will save you? You're a weak, broken fool just like your father! You destroyed this family for a nobody!"
Caleb stood motionless as the police cuffed his stepmother and uncle, dragging them toward the exit.
"My father died broken because he let you control him," Caleb said softly as Eleanor was led past him. "I am not my father. And Sadie will never know your name."
As the doors closed behind the disgraced executives, the remaining board members sat in stunned silence.

Caleb walked to the head of the table, picked up the gavel, and tapped it once against the wood.
"Now," Caleb said, his voice quiet and absolute. "Let’s discuss the future of this company."
