Chapter 6 - The Trial of Shadows
While Caleb worked to heal his daughter’s spirit, the legal machinery of the state was grinding Eleanor and Arthur Vance into dust. The evidence pulled from the bank safety deposit box, combined with internal company emails uncovered by federal auditors, created an airtight criminal indictment.
The trial began in mid-November.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and curious spectators. Eleanor sat at the defense table in an immaculate black dress, her face cold and unreadable, while Arthur looked visibly defeated, his defense team scrambling to negotiate a plea deal.
Caleb took the witness stand on the third day of testimony.
Under the bright court lights, he delivered a quiet, devastating account of the systematic isolation his family had forced upon Mara, the destruction of his mail, and the attempt to abandon his daughter in the state system to secure corporate power.
"Mr. Vance," Eleanor's defense attorney asked during cross-examination, trying to pivot the narrative. "Is it not true that your primary motivation for pressing these extreme charges is to consolidate absolute control over Vance Enterprises and void the existing trust board?"
Caleb looked past the attorney, staring directly into Eleanor’s ice-cold eyes.
"I offered to surrender my entire inheritance, every share of stock, and every title I hold to Eleanor Vance five days ago," Caleb said clearly, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "In exchange, I asked only that she sign a full confession acknowledging what she did to Mara and Sadie. She refused."
A murmur swept through the public gallery. The judge hammered her gavel for order.
Caleb continued, his tone unwavering. "I don't care about the money. I don't care about the company. I am here today because the people sitting at that table believed that human lives could be bought, hidden, and discarded when they became inconvenient to a balance sheet. They were wrong."
Eleanor glared at him, her hands trembling subtly against the legal pads on her table. For the first time, she saw that she hadn't just lost a legal battle; she had lost her grip on the legacy she had spent a lifetime ruthlessly guarding.
Two days later, the jury returned a unanimous verdict.
Arthur Vance was convicted of grand larceny, bribery, and obstruction of justice, sentenced to twelve years in federal prison.

As Eleanor was led away in handcuffs, she turned to look at Caleb one last time. But Caleb had already turned his back on her, walking out of the courtroom doors into the crisp autumn sunshine where Sadie was waiting for him.
