Chapter 9 - The Trial of Regret

Six months later, the civil and criminal proceedings against Beatrice Miller concluded in the county courthouse.

I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside my parents and our legal team. I was wearing a tailored white pantsuit, my platinum pixie cut sleek and perfectly styled, radiating quiet grace and complete peace.

Across the courtroom sat Beatrice.

The transformation was staggering. Without her expensive makeup, designer clothes, or high-society hair stylists, she looked decades older. Her hair was gray and unkempt, her clothes were plain, borrowed garments from a local thrift store, and her hands trembled uncontrollably in her lap.

Liam sat far behind her in the back row of the gallery, looking thin, exhausted, and broken, working two part-time jobs just to pay off his corporate debt and live in a tiny, one-bedroom basement apartment outside the city.

The judge slammed her gavel down hard.

"In the matter of Sterling v. Miller," Judge Elizabeth Vance stated sternly, looking down over her glasses at Beatrice. "This court finds the defendant, Beatrice Miller, guilty of Intentional Battery, Unlawful Imprisonment, and Civil Defamation."

The judge leaned forward, her expression filled with profound disdain.

"To physically assault a young woman, cut her hair out of pure classist malice, and throw her onto the street is a display of human cruelty that this court will not tolerate. In addition to the full forfeiture of your personal assets to satisfy outstanding bank debts, you are hereby sentenced to two years of mandatory community service at local homeless shelters..."

The judge paused, looking directly at Beatrice.

"...starting with St. Jude’s Church Shelter on 4th Street."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom.

Beatrice let out a strangled, choked sob, burying her face in her calloused, trembling hands.

The very place she had thrown me out to—the place she had sneered at as a shelter for "trash"—was now the place where she would spend the next two years scrubbing floors, wiping tables, and serving meals in plain view of the entire city.
