Chapter 5 - The Gala of Illusion

Friday evening arrived with crisp autumn air and an atmosphere of opulence at the grand Oakridge Country Club.
Crystal chandeliers cast shimmering light across polished marble floors. High-society elite, local politicians, and wealthy business owners moved through the ballroom in tailored tuxedos and designer evening gowns, sipping vintage champagne offered by waiters on silver platters.
Beatrice walked through the room like a queen inspecting her court. She wore a lavish emerald-green silk dress, heavy diamond jewelry, and carried a gold-plated handbag. She made sure to greet every influential woman in the room, bragging loudly about her son’s impending multi-million-dollar deal with the mysterious Sterling family.
"Oh, yes, Victoria," Beatrice boasted to the wife of a local bank president. "My Liam is securing the entire Sterling Heritage account tonight. The Sterlings are practically royalty in this state, you know. Only the best for our family."
Liam stood beside her, wearing a crisp black tuxedo, looking nervously at his watch. His hands were trembling slightly as he held his champagne flute. His entire life’s work hinged on tonight.
At 8:30 PM, the brass doors of the main ballroom swung open.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing across the silent room. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Heritage Agriculture... Mr. Thomas Sterling, accompanied by his daughter and sole executive heiress, Ms. Chloe Sterling!"
A wave of respectful applause broke out as Thomas Sterling stepped into the room, looking commanding and powerful in a bespoke dark suit.
Beside him walked a woman who instantly stole the breath from every person in the room.
She wore a breathtaking, ice-blue backless silk gown that flowed like liquid diamonds with every step. Her razor-sharp platinum-blonde pixie cut framed a face of flawless, icy beauty. Gold and sapphire earrings caught the light, and her posture radiated unshakeable, aristocratic authority.
Liam gasped, his champagne glass slipping through his fingers and shattering against the marble floor.
"C-Chloe...?" Liam stammered, his eyes wide with absolute, terrifying shock.
Beatrice, standing beside him, sneered at the broken glass before looking up toward the entrance. "Liam, pull yourself together! What is wrong with—"

Beatrice’s voice cut off abruptly. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a corpse.
Her eyes dragged over the striking platinum-blonde woman holding Thomas Sterling’s arm—the confidence, the diamonds, the razor-sharp hair cut by a master stylist... and the piercing black eyes that stared directly across the room, locking onto Beatrice with cold, merciless amusement.
