Chapter 8 - The DivorceThe divorce proceedings were finalized via video link.

Grant sat in a gray jumpsuit in a federal detention center, his face gaunt, his polished charm entirely erased by the brutal reality of his new life. His lawyer advised him not to contest anything, as any delay would only anger the federal judge overseeing his criminal case.

When the judge asked if Grant had any final words regarding the dissolution of the marriage, Grant looked directly into the camera.

"Evie," he rasped, his voice hollow. "I loved you."

I stared at the screen. I felt no pity. I felt no anger. I felt nothing at all for the man in the gray jumpsuit.

"No, Grant," I said clearly into my microphone. "You loved having something to break. But I'm not broken anymore."

I closed the laptop, severing the connection.
