Chapter 10 - Breathing

I didn't fish. Instead, I waded deeper into the river, the water rising past my waist, then my chest.

I leaned back, trusting the current, and let my feet lift off the riverbed.

The water caught me. It held me up, weightless and free. The North Carolina sun warmed my face, the sky a brilliant, uninterrupted blue above me.

I closed my eyes and took a deep, full breath.

There were no shadows waiting for me at home. There were no hidden marks on my skin. There was only the river, the sun, and the unshakable knowledge that I had survived the worst, fought back, and reclaimed my life.
