Chapter 6 - The Fall

Victor’s men stepped forward, seamlessly boxing Grant in. To the rest of the ballroom, it looked like a group of wealthy men having a quiet business discussion. No one noticed the sheer terror radiating from my husband.

Grant looked at me, his eyes wide with panic. "Evie... Evie, please. Tell them it's a mistake. You know the accounts. Help me."

He was begging. The man who had locked me in bathrooms and threatened my father's life was begging for my protection.

I looked at the purple bruises on my wrist. Then, I looked him dead in the eye.

"You always told me you had connections, Grant," I said quietly. "It seems your connections have finally caught up with you."

I turned my back on him.

Adrian offered me his arm, and together, we walked out of the alcove, leaving Grant to be escorted downstairs by men who did not forgive, did not forget, and did not leave marks that could be easily hidden.

As we walked through the lobby, I heard the faint sound of sirens in the distance.

"Did Victor call the police?" I asked Adrian as we stepped into the cool night air.

"No," Adrian said with a faint smile. "I did. I anonymously forwarded the same financial ledger to the FBI's white-collar crime division an hour ago. The Feds are about to raid the private dining room. Victor and his men will scatter, but Grant... Grant is going to be caught holding the bag with the cartels' money."

He opened the SUV door for me.

"He's going to federal prison, Evie. And because he's a known associate of a cartel, he'll be placed in maximum security. He will never touch you again."

I sank into the leather seat, the weight of two years of terror finally, permanently, lifting from my shoulders.
