Chapter 6 - THE ROGUE DOCTOR

The Apex Reproductive Center was an glass-and-steel skyscraper in the heart of Boston's medical district. Its lobby was opulent, filled with white marble, soft jazz music, and high-end art designed to reassure wealthy clients that money could buy biological perfection.

At 2:00 PM on Friday, Arthur Vance, Detective Miller from the Boston Police Department, and I walked through the glass doors.

I wore Rose in a secure front carrier against my chest, her tiny head tucked safely under my coat. She was three weeks old now, growing stronger every day, her small hands constantly reaching for my fingers whenever she heard my voice.

We took the private elevator to the eighth floor.

Dr. Marcus Thorne’s office was a luxurious suite with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Charles River. Dr. Thorne—a man in his late fifties with slicked-back silver hair, wearing an immaculate white lab coat—sat behind a glass desk.

When we walked in unannounced with a uniformed police detective, Dr. Thorne’s professional smile vanished.

"What is the meaning of this?" Thorne demanded, standing up. "This is a private medical office!"

Detective Miller laid a federal search warrant flat on his desk. "Dr. Thorne, we are executing a court order for all electronic records, freezer logbooks, and financial transactions related to Patient Batch 4092—Chloe and Ethan Vale."

Thorne’s face drained of color. He looked down at the paper, his hands trembling slightly as he touched his gold desk clock. "There has been a clinical misunderstanding. I have already communicated with the Vale family’s corporate legal team—"

"The Vale family legal team can't save you from federal medical fraud, Dr. Thorne," Arthur Vance interrupted, leaning across the desk. "We know about the fifty thousand dollar off-the-books transfer from Chloe Vale. But we also know about the secondary wire transfer."

Thorne swallowed hard. "What secondary transfer?"

Arthur pulled out a bank statement obtained via emergency court subpoena. "On October 10th—two days before Clara Vane underwent the surrogate transfer—a payment of two hundred thousand dollars was transferred to a shell company registered in your name in the Cayman Islands."

Arthur leaned closer, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "The wire originated from a private account controlled by Julian Vale."

I gasped softly, clutching Rose closer to my chest.

Julian.

Ethan’s older brother had bought the clinic.

"Julian paid you to swap the male embryo for a female one," I said, the horrifying truth bursting into the clear air of the office. "Julian knew that if Ethan had a son before August thirty-first, Ethan would inherit the controlling shares of Vale Family Holdings. So Julian paid you to ensure the pregnancy resulted in a girl!"

Dr. Thorne dropped back into his leather chair, holding his head in his hands. The polished, untouchable medical expert collapsed under the weight of his own corruption.

"I... I had no choice," Thorne stammered, his voice broken. "Julian found out about the off-the-books donor sperm I used for Chloe. He threatened to report my license to the state board and ruin me! He said if I just transferred a female embryo instead of the male one, he would pay off my debts and keep my secret!"

"You tampered with human life for money and blackmailed silence," Detective Miller said, pulling out her handcuffs. "Dr. Marcus Thorne, you are under arrest for medical malpractice, conspiracy to commit fraud, and falsification of federal records."

As Detective Miller read Thorne his rights, Arthur turned to me, a fierce, triumphant smile on his face.

"We have them, Clara," Arthur said. "This isn't just a custody dispute anymore. This is a massive corporate conspiracy. Julian Vale manipulated the entire birth to disinherit his brother and steal control of the family trust."

"And Rose?" I asked, looking down at her sweet, resting face.

"Rose is the ultimate evidence," Arthur said softly. "She is the innocent life that exposed a empire of lies. Now, we take this to the probate court and finish them once and for all."
