Chapter 5 - SHATTERED SILENCE

"Help!" Chloe’s voice echoed down from the second floor. "Help me!"

The state troopers didn't wait for permission. They drew their sidearms and pushed past Julian Vale into the grand marble foyer.

"Clear the stairs!" the lead officer shouted.

I ran in behind them, holding my breath as boots thundered up the curved staircase. We reached a heavy mahogany door at the end of the east wing. The lock had been engaged from the outside with a brass key sitting in the keyhole.

The trooper turned the key and threw the door open.

The room was in chaos. A bedside lamp lay broken on the floor, and Chloe was standing by the broken window, her hands bleeding from small glass cuts, her face pale and streaked with tears.

"Clara!" Chloe shrieked, sprinting past the officers and throwing her arms around me. She collapsed against my shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably. "They were going to send me to a private facility in Switzerland! Ethan said I ruined his life!"

Ethan stepped out from an adjoining bathroom, his dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, looking pale and caught off guard. "This is a domestic matter! She is hysterical from postpartum psychosis!"

"Shut your mouth, Mr. Vale," the state trooper barked, pulling out handcuffs. "You are under arrest for domestic endangerment and false imprisonment."

As the officers clicked the heavy steel cuffs around Ethan’s wrists, Julian stood in the doorway, his face dark as a thundercloud.

"You think this wins you the child, Clara?" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "You just destroyed your sister's life. And that baby is still a fraud in the eyes of the law."

Chloe pulled away from me, looking down at the floor, unable to meet my eyes. "Clara... I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I lied to you. I was so afraid he would leave me..."

I looked at my sister—the woman I had spent my life protecting, the woman who had used my body and my love as a shield to hide her own desperate lies.

"I didn't do this for you, Chloe," I said, my voice cold and clear. "I did this for Rose."

We gathered outside on the driveway under the flashing red and blue lights of the police cars. Rain began to fall softly, misting over the dark ocean beyond the cliffs.

Arthur Vance stood beside me as Chloe was loaded into an ambulance to be checked for glass injuries.

"What happens now?" I asked Arthur.

"Tomorrow morning, Ethan Vale will be arraigned," Arthur said. "And we will use his arrest record to secure a temporary protective order giving you exclusive physical custody of Rose. But there is still one missing piece of this puzzle."

"Dr. Thorne," I said.

"Yes," Arthur agreed, looking back at the dark mansion. "Dr. Marcus Thorne at the Apex Reproductive Center. We need to know why an elite IVF specialist substituted an anonymous donor, lied on federal medical certificates, and produced a female baby when Ethan Vale paid for a boy."

"He didn't just make a mistake," I realized suddenly. "Someone paid him to swap that embryo."

Arthur looked at me, a sharp glint in his eye. "And if someone paid him to swap it... then Rose isn't an accident. She was created for a reason."
