Chapter 3 - THE UNBROKEN THREAD

Three days later, I sat in the modest living room of my small bungalow home on the outskirts of Portland. The house smelled of baby lotion, clean cotton, and brewed chamomile tea.
Rose lay asleep in a bassinet beside my armchair, wrapped in a yellow blanket I had bought at a local shop. Every time she made a soft sigh in her sleep, my heart swelled with a fierce, protective instinct that terrified me. I was her aunt biologically—or so I believed—yet I was now her only shield against the wealth and power of the Vale family.
A knock sounded at the front door.
I checked the security camera on my phone before opening it. Standing on the porch was Arthur Vance—not the Vale family lawyer, but his older brother, a renowned family law attorney in Maine who had cut ties with his family’s corporate firm years ago. Beside him stood Elena.
"Miss Vane," Arthur Vance said, taking off his hat as he stepped inside. "Elena asked me to review your case. What happened in that hospital was an abomination."
"Thank you for coming, Mr. Vance," I said, leading them to the kitchen table.
Arthur pulled a thick file from his coat. "We have a massive legal fight ahead, but we also have a bombshell. The medical records from the Apex Reproductive Center arrived this morning under court order."
I leaned forward, my pulse racing. "What do they say?"
Arthur spread out three color-coded lab reports. "When Ethan and Chloe underwent IVF eighteen months ago, six embryos were created. Four were female, two were male. Ethan explicitly instructed Dr. Marcus Thorne at Apex to destroy the four female embryos and transfer only the healthiest male embryo."
"Alexander," I whispered, remembering the blue nursery and the silver letters above the crib.
"Exactly," Arthur said, his brow furrowing. "The records show that on October 12th, an XY embryo—designated Batch 4-Male—was prepped for transfer into your uterus. But when we ran the hospital's newborn DNA panel on Rose two days ago, the results blew the doors off their narrative."
Arthur slid a paper across the table toward me.
"Rose is not an XY male, obviously," Arthur said. "But she is also not genetically related to Ethan Vale."
I froze. The room seemed to spin. "What?"
"Read the markers, Miss Vane," Arthur said softly. "The DNA profile confirms that Chloe Vale is Rose’s biological mother. But Ethan Vale is not her biological father."
I stared at the black-and-white printout, my mind scrambling to connect the dots. "How is that possible? Chloe swore to me it was their joint embryo!"
"There are two possibilities," Elena interjected gently. "Either Dr. Thorne at Apex made a horrific lab mix-up with donor sperm... or Chloe secretly used a different sperm donor without telling Ethan."
The truth hit me like a physical blow.
Chloe’s terror when Rose was born—it wasn't just disappointment over a girl. It was absolute, blinding panic because she knew the moment a DNA test was performed to verify the baby for the family trust, Ethan would discover her dark secret: she had cheated on him, or she had secretly used donor sperm because Ethan was infertile and too proud to admit it.
"Chloe didn't recoil from Rose because she didn't love her," I whispered, tears filling my eyes as the horrifying realization sank in. "She recoiled because Rose was proof of her lie."
"And Ethan," Arthur added coldly, " abandoned the baby not just because she was female, but because his brother Julian’s investigators immediately flagged the genetic mismatch at the hospital lab. Ethan realized he had been cuckolded, and his chance at the Vale trust was permanently shattered."
The phone on the counter suddenly buzzed, vibrating loudly against the laminate surface.
I picked it up. The caller ID was restricted.
I answered and placed it on speaker. "Hello?"
"Sister..." Chloe’s voice came through the speaker, ragged, desperate, and muffled by heavy sobbing. "Please... please tell me she’s safe."

My hands tightened around the phone. "Chloe? Where are you?"
"Ethan knows," Chloe sobbed hysterically. "He found out about the clinic records! Julian took my phone, my car keys—I'm locked in the guesthouse in Kennebunkport! You have to hide her, Clara! You have to hide Rose! They aren't just going to leave her with you... they're going to declare her legally non-existent!"
