Chapter 9 - The Song of the Park

The private section of the Central Park Conservatory Garden was closed to the public that afternoon—a luxury Damian had arranged so Sofia could enjoy the flowers without the overwhelming crowds and the loud noises of the city tourists.

Sofia ran ahead, her feet dancing through the rows of blooming yellow tulips. She stopped every few feet to gently touch the petals, her face twisting into a look of deep, focused concentration.

Nora and Damian spread the cashmere blanket beneath the shade of a massive elm tree. They sat close together, their shoulders touching, watching the little girl interact with the world on her own terms.

"She’s changing every day," Damian murmured, his eyes reflecting the soft green of the garden. "Before you walked into that store on Madison, Nora, I thought my daughter's life would always be a prison. I thought I had to build a fortress of blood just to keep her from being broken by the world."

"The world can be very loud, Damian," Nora said softly, resting her head against his shoulder. "But you don't need a fortress to keep it quiet. You just need to know which lights to turn off, and who to hold close when the noise gets too loud."

Damian turned his head, kissing the top of her dark hair. "I love you, Nora. I think I loved you the moment I saw you kneeling on that cold marble floor, risking everything for a child who had no voice."

Nora looked up, her heart full to bursting. "I love you too, Damian. The father, the protector... the man who smells like rain."

Sofia suddenly stopped by a patch of bright purple lavender. She looked back at them, her wide, intelligent eyes focusing directly on Nora’s face for three long, beautiful seconds. She didn't speak, but she raised her small hand and waved, a real, deliberate gesture of connection.

Nora smiled, tears of pure joy pricking her eyes as she waved back.
