Chapter 6 - The Traitor in the Ranks

Three months passed like a beautiful, golden dream. Under Nora’s gentle, structured guidance, Sofia thrived in ways Damian hadn't thought possible. The night terrors stopped. Her vocabulary expanded, and she even began to make brief, fleeting eye contact with Nora, her small face lighting up whenever Nora sang her the "yellow song"—an old lullaby Nora’s grandmother had taught her.

Nora’s own life had transformed. Her mother’s medical debts were fully cleared, and Liam was living in a beautiful, safe apartment near his college campus, his tuition secure for the next four years.

But in Damian's world, peace was always a temporary illusion.

It was a Tuesday evening. Damian was sitting at his grand mahogany desk in the penthouse study, reviewing shipping manifests, when Nora walked in carrying a tray of coffee.

"You've been staring at those screens for six hours, Damian," she said, her voice warm, using his first name naturally now. Over the months, the cold distance between the employer and employee had melted into something deep, resonant, and unspoken.

"Something is wrong with the cargo manifests in Sector 4, Nora," Damian said, rubbing his eyes, his voice laced with exhaustion. "Three of our international medical shipments—shipments containing specialized equipment for children’s hospitals—were intercepted by federal customs today. Someone leaked the routing codes."

Nora set the tray down, her heart sinking. "Who had access to those codes?"

Before Damian could answer, the lights in the entire penthouse suddenly flickered and died. Total darkness swallowed the rooms.

Instantly, the emergency red backup lights kicked in, casting an eerie, bloody glow across the glass windows. Down the hallway, Sofia let out a sharp, panicked cry.

"Sofia!" Nora bolted from the study, her instincts driving her straight toward the girl’s bedroom.

Damian pulled a sleek black pistol from his desk drawer—forgetting his promise, driven entirely by the primal instinct of a father under siege. "Mikhail! Report!" he roared into his radio.

The radio responded with nothing but static.

Nora reached Sofia’s room just as a shadow detached itself from the hallway corner. It was Mikhail. But he didn't have his usual protective stance. In his hand, he held a heavy tactical taser, and his face was twisted into something cold and unfamiliar.

"Mikhail?" Nora gasped, shielding Sofia behind her body. "What are you doing? The lights—"

"Step aside, Nora," Mikhail said, his voice flat. "The Lucchesi family paid me five million dollars to deliver the kid. With the federal prosecutors closing in on Kell’s shipping lanes, this tower isn't safe anymore anyway. I’m taking my retirement."

"You traitor," Nora hissed, her fingers gripping the edge of Sofia’s mattress. "Damian trusted you! He treated you like a brother!"

"Damian got soft the moment he let you into this house," Mikhail sneered, stepping forward, raising the taser. "Now move, or I'll hurt you too."

"No!" Sofia screamed from behind Nora, her small hands clamping over her ears as the red emergency lights flashed rhythmically, triggering a massive sensory overload.

Nora didn't wait for Mikhail to strike. She grabbed a heavy, solid-bronze sensory lamp from Sofia’s nightstand—a lamp Damian had bought to help the girl relax—and swung it with all her strength.

Crack.

The lamp shattered against the side of Mikhail’s skull. The giant man stumbled back, cursing violently as blood began to leak from his temple. He lunged forward, his massive hand clamping around Nora’s throat, lifting her off her feet, pinning her against the wall.

"You stupid bitch," Mikhail growled, tightening his grip.

May you like

Nora couldn't breathe. The room began to spin, the red lights blurring into a chaotic haze. But through the rushing sound of blood in her ears, she heard the heavy, rhythmic thud of a door being kicked off its hinges.

Damian Kell had arrived.
