Chapter 8 - The Reckoning

At four o'clock the following afternoon, the rain over Chicago stopped, leaving behind a cold, misty sky.
Inside the private study of the Kade Estate, Weston stood before a wall-sized digital map of the city. Arrayed behind him were twelve senior captains of the Kade Syndicate—men who controlled the docks, the transport networks, the legal fronts, and the private security forces across three states.
Priya stood near the open doorway, holding Owen in a fleece carrier strapped across her chest. She had refused to leave the room; she wanted to see the man who held her and Owen’s fate in his hands.
Dominic stepped forward, holding a tablet. "Boss, we’ve tracked Don Alberto Moretti to his private estate in Barrington. He’s gathered his remaining lieutenants. They know the hospital hit failed, and they're preparing to flee to Sicily tonight."
Weston turned around slowly. He wore a crisp black suit, a charcoal tie, and a quiet aura of authority that made every veteran captain in the room stand straight.
"Alberto Moretti tried to murder my son in a glass box," Weston spoke, his voice low, measured, and terrifyingly clear. "He bought a doctor. He sent gunmen into a room full of premature babies. He broke the ancient rule of our city."
He looked across the room, his eyes finding Priya and little Owen.
"There will be no negotiations," Weston declared. "There will be no truce. By midnight tonight, the Moretti family name ceases to exist in the state of Illinois. Take everything they own. Freeze their accounts. Hand their street captains over to the federal prosecutor, and bring Alberto Moretti to me."
"Yes, Boss!" the twelve captains responded as one, bowing their heads before turning and filing out of the room like an army marching to war.
Weston walked over to Priya, stepping out onto the stone balcony overlooking the misty expanse of Lake Michigan.
"Are you afraid of me, Priya?" Weston asked softly, looking out over the dark water. "Seeing how I operate... seeing the world I rule?"
Priya looked down at Owen, who was sleeping peacefully against her heart, then looked up into Weston’s dark grey eyes.
"I’m not afraid of you, Weston," Priya said honestly. "I’m afraid of what this world does to your heart. You are a good man who was forced into a dark life. Don't let their evil turn you into something you're not."
Weston reached out, his long fingers tenderly stroking her cheek, his face softening with immense gratitude. "You are my conscience now, Priya. As long as I have you and Owen to come home to, I will never lose my way."

He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her forehead, his lips warm against her skin.
"Stay inside tonight," Weston whispered. "When I return, this city will finally be safe for our son."
