Chapter 7 - The Fortress on the Lake

Thirty minutes later, three heavy black armored SUVs tore out of the underground garage of St. Jude Memorial, speeding north along the rain-slicked pavement of Lake Shore Drive.
The world outside the dark tinted windows was a blur of flashing city lights and grey rain. Inside the middle SUV, Priya sat in a plush leather captain’s chair, holding Owen close while a portable transport incubator rested secured beside her.
Weston sat across from her, a clean suit jacket draped over his shoulders, while a private medic dressed his minor cuts.
The caravan turned off the main highway, passing through a set of massive iron gates guarded by armed men with attack dogs, pulling up the long, winding driveway of the Kade Estate in Lake Forest.
The property was a breathtaking, fifteen-acre waterfront mansion surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls, infrared perimeter sensors, and fifty full-time security personnel. It was not just a home; it was a private fortress built to withstand a siege.
The SUV stopped beneath the marble portico. Weston opened the door himself, stepping out into the cool night air, then reaching back inside to offer his hand to Priya.
"Welcome to my home, Priya," Weston said softly as she stepped down, holding Owen safely beneath a thick wool blanket.
They walked inside. The grand foyer featured soaring cathedral ceilings, marble floors, and a sweeping double staircase. But instead of cold, ostentatious mafia luxury, the interior felt warm, elegant, and filled with quiet dignity.
A middle-aged woman in a clean apron rushed down the stairs, her face pale with worry.
"Mr. Kade!" she cried out. "We heard what happened at the hospital on the news! Is the baby—"
"He's safe, Mary," Weston reassured her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "This is Nurse Priya Osei. She saved Owen’s life. She will be staying in the master guest suite on the second floor. I want this house placed on Level One lockdown."
"Right away, sir!" Mary nodded tearfully, looking at Priya with profound gratitude. "Bless you, my dear. Bless you."
Weston led Priya upstairs to a sunlit, beautifully furnished suite overlooking Lake Michigan. Connected directly to her bedroom was a fully equipped, state-of-the-art private nursery that Weston had quietly built over the past three months—complete with medical-grade oxygen monitors, a private prep kitchen, and a plush rocking chair beside a large bay window.
Priya set Owen gently into his new crib. The tiny boy let out a soft sigh, stretching his small arms before settling deeply into sleep.
Priya stood over the crib, her hands resting on the wooden railing, suddenly feeling the full, crushing weight of the night’s trauma hit her all at once. Her knees wobbled, and she reached out to steady herself against the wall.
Weston was beside her instantly, catching her around the waist, lifting her effortlessly, and carrying her over to the velvet sofa near the window.
"Sit," he commanded gently, kneeling in front of her, pulling off her dusty nursing shoes with tender care. "You've been running on pure adrenaline for twelve hours. You need rest."
Priya looked down at him—the most feared criminal leader in the Midwest, kneeling on the rug, carefully rubbing her tired feet.
"Weston..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "What happens now? The Moretti family... they aren't going to stop, are they?"
May you like
Weston paused, looking up into her eyes. The gentle warmth in his face hardened into something cold, vast, and absolute.
"They aren't going to get another chance, Priya," Weston said softly. "Tomorrow morning, I am ending the war. Permanently."
