Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

By noon, the atmosphere on the seventh floor had shifted from tense to suffocating.

A corporate restructuring team representing Kade Global Investments had marched into the administrative offices on the ninth floor with a stack of legal documents. By one o'clock, the CEO of St. Jude Memorial had been placed on administrative leave, and a private security force answerable directly to Weston Kade had officially taken over hospital floor access.

In the NICU, Priya stood behind a brand-new, sterile prep station that had been assembled directly inside Owen’s private room.

Under the watchful eyes of two armed guards, Priya personally mixed Owen’s TPN solution using pure, medical-grade lipid vials pulled from an un-tampered shipment Weston’s men had intercepted directly at the pharmaceutical manufacturer's warehouse.

She attached the fresh bag to the IV line, flushed the tube, and connected it to Owen’s central line.

15:00 PM.

Within three hours of receiving the untainted, nutrient-dense formulation, Owen’s vital signs began to shift. The greyish pallor of his skin softened into a warm, healthy pink. His heart rate, which had been erratic and elevated for days, stabilized into a smooth, strong rhythm.

Weston sat in his armchair, his eyes fixed on the heart monitor screen like a man staring at a miracle.

"Look at his oxygen saturation," Priya smiled softly, pointing to the glowing blue numbers. "Ninety-eight percent on room air support. He’s taking the lipids, Weston. His body was never broken. He was just starving."

Weston stood up, walking over to stand beside Priya at the prep table. The murderous tension in his shoulders had loosened just enough to reveal the deep, profound relief beneath.

"How long until he gains back the weight?" he asked softly.

"If we maintain this formulation, he’ll regain those seven ounces within forty-eight hours," Priya promised, turning her head to look at him.

They were standing close—so close that Priya could feel the heat radiating from his body. For weeks, she had viewed him as a myth: the ruthless mafia kingpin of Chicago, a man whose name was whispered in fear across the South Side streets where she grew up. But standing here beside his son’s bed, looking into his clear grey eyes, she saw only a man capable of unimaginable love—and unimaginable sacrifice.

"Priya," Weston said softly, his voice dropping into a tender register he reserved only for her and his son. "Where did you grow up?"

Priya blinked, surprised by the question. "Twelfth and Pulaski. South Side."

Weston smiled faintly—a rare, beautiful sight that transformed his stern, carved-granite face into something breathtakingly handsome. "My father started his business three blocks from there. It's a tough neighborhood to grow up in."

"It teaches you how to spot a liar," Priya replied with a small smile. "And it teaches you to fight for what's yours."

"Is that why you didn't run away when I threatened Dr. Voss?"

"I knew you were barking, not biting," Priya smirked gently. "A man who really wants to kill someone doesn't yell about it first. He stays quiet."

Weston’s smile faded into an expression of intense, piercing admiration. "You are an exceptional woman, Priya Osei."

Before Priya could respond, the heavy glass doors of the room swung open.

Dr. Everett Voss walked in, flanked by two armed Kade guards. His face was flushed, his bow tie slightly crooked, holding a silver clipboard against his chest.

"Mr. Kade," Voss stammered, his voice trembling as he looked around at the private prep station and the extra guards standing in the corners. "I... I was informed by administration that all medical orders for Owen Kade are now being filtered exclusively through Nurse Osei? This is a massive breach of hospital protocol! I am the Chief of Neonatology!"

Weston turned slowly, stepping between Voss and the incubator, his tall frame blocking the doctor’s view of his son.

"Doctor Voss," Weston said smoothly, taking a slow step toward him. "Tell me... how long have you worked at St. Jude?"

"Fifteen years!" Voss declared, trying to puff out his chest. "I built this unit!"

"And during those fifteen years," Weston continued, his voice dangerously soft, "how much money did you owe to the illegal gambling dens on 22nd Street?"

Dr. Voss froze. The color drained from his face so fast he looked as if he were about to vomit onto his clean white coat. "I... I don't know what you're talking about—"

"Dominic," Weston called out calmly without looking away from Voss.

Dominic, Weston’s head of security, stepped into the room holding an iPad. He tapped the screen and read aloud in a flat, monotone voice:

"Everett Voss. Outstanding gambling debt: $1.4 million to the Moretti Syndicate. Three wire transfers received last week from an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Luciano Enterprises. Total amount transferred: $500,000."

Priya gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

The Moretti Syndicate. The chief rival faction to the Kade empire—the very family responsible for the car bomb that had killed Weston’s wife, Genevieve.

Voss dropped his silver clipboard. It hit the linoleum floor with a deafening CLANG.

"They... they said it wouldn't hurt him!" Voss shrieked, backing away until his back hit the glass wall, tears of sheer terror bursting from his eyes. "They told me it was just a growth retardant! They said he would just fail to thrive and be transferred to an out-of-state hospice! They said if I didn't do it, they would break my daughter's legs!"

Weston didn't yell. He didn't rush forward.

He simply looked at Dominic.

"Take him down to the basement," Weston ordered softly. "Keep him alive until he gives us every name in the Moretti family who authorized this."

"No! Please! Mr. Kade! Please!" Voss screamed as Dominic and two beefy guards grabbed his arms, dragging him out of the room, his shoes sliding uselessly across the polished floor.

The heavy glass doors swung shut behind them, plunging the room back into quiet.

Priya stood frozen beside the prep table, her heart hammering against her ribs. The horror of what had almost happened—how close a corrupt doctor had come to executing a baby to settle a mob debt—turned her blood to ice.

Weston turned back to her. The cold, murderous look in his eyes vanished the moment he saw her shaking frame.

He stepped over, wrapping his strong arms around her, pulling her tight against his chest. Priya didn't pull away. She buried her face against his neck, inhaling the warm, steady scent of him, letting his overwhelming strength anchor her against the madness.

"It's over, Priya," Weston whispered against her hair, his hand gently holding the back of her head. "I've got you. I've got both of you."
