Chapter 9 - The Drake Hotel Gala

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel glittered under thousands of crystal chandelier lights. String quartets played softly in the background as wealthy donors, politicians, and judges mingled in expensive designer gowns and tailored tuxedos, sipping champagne and celebrating the city's supposed philanthropic triumphs.
Federal Prosecutor Harrison Vance stood near the center of the room, holding a glass of sparkling water, basking in the applause of local councilmen as he gave an interview to a reporter from the Chicago Tribune.
"My office remains completely committed to rooting out systemic corruption at every level of society," Vance declared, projecting his voice for maximum theatrical effect. "No criminal syndicate, no matter how powerful or ruthless, will ever escape the long arm of the law."
"Is that right, Harrison?"
A smooth, chillingly calm voice cut through the applause, stopping Vance mid-sentence.
The prosecutor turned around, his confident smile faltering instantly as Weston Kade stepped out from the crowd. Weston was dressed in an immaculate midnight-blue tuxedo, flanked by Silas and two armed enforcers who blended seamlessly into the formal attire of the gala staff.
Vance swallowed hard, his face turning pale. "Kade... what is the meaning of this? This is a private charity event. Federal marshals are stationed—"
"Federal marshals are currently occupied reading the documents my associates just delivered to their command vehicles," Weston interrupted, stepping closer until he was standing face-to-face with the prosecutor.
Weston reached into his jacket pocket and pulled down a sleek, wireless tablet, tapping the screen.
Suddenly, the massive projector screen hanging above the ballroom stage—previously displaying the charity's logo—flickered black. A split second later, high-resolution bank statements, offshore wire transfer logs, and recorded phone conversations between Harrison Vance and the late Everett Marchetti began flashing across the screen in bold, unedited detail.
The ballroom erupted into instant, deafening chaos.
Guests gasped, dropping their champagne flutes, scattering backward in horror as the undeniable proof of Vance’s systematic bribery, extortion, and cartel collaboration was broadcasted live to the city's entire political elite.
"No... no, that's a deepfake! That's forged!" Vance shrieked, lunging forward to grab the tablet, but Silas firmly shoved him back into a mahogany pillar with a bone-jarring thud.

"Your career is over, Harrison," Weston said, his voice echoing quietly through the stunned silence of the ballroom. "You tried to use the law as a shield for your own greed. In my city, justice has a very different address."
Two minutes later, flashlights cut through the doors of the ballroom as federal agents—real, uncorrupted agents acting on the digital evidence package Weston had provided—placed handcuffs on Harrison Vance and dragged him screaming out of the hotel in front of the entire Chicago press corps.
