Chapter 5 - The Syndicate’s Fury

The mahogany conference room on the top floor of the Kade Mansion was shrouded in tobacco smoke and heavy, suffocating tension.

Silas Bram stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering skyline of downtown Chicago, his face carved from stone. Across the long oak table sat three of Weston's most senior capos—Vince, Marcus, and Sal—their arms crossed, their expressions dark and mutinous.

"You've gone soft, Boss," Vince growled, slamming a heavy fist onto the polished wood. "Giving half a million dollars to a maid? Relocating a civilian brat to a VIP hospital wing? Word is already leaking down through the ranks. The boys are talking. They're saying the Kade Syndicate is losing its edge, that our leader is getting distracted by charity work!"

Weston sat at the head of the table, leaning back casually in his leather chair. He poured a finger of amber bourbon into a crystal tumbler, swirling the liquid slowly without taking a sip. His scarred face remained impassive, but his cold, predatory eyes swept across the capos with a weight that made Vince shift uncomfortably in his seat.

"Let them talk, Vince," Weston replied, his voice silky and dangerous. "Dissent keeps the blood pumping. But let me remind you of something very fundamental about how we survive in this city. Loyalty isn't bought with blind obedience. It’s earned through absolute control."

"Control?" Sal scoffed, shaking his head. "She lied to you! She manipulated Silas into funneling Syndicate funds out of the offshore accounts! By our own laws, traitors get a bullet to the back of the head and a shallow grave in the Indiana swamps. You’re breaking code, Weston."

"She isn't a traitor," Weston snapped sharply, the temperature in the room dropping twenty degrees in a single second. "She didn't sell our secrets to the Marchettis. She didn't leak our port schedules to the feds. She was using our money to fix a mess our own men created."

Silas turned away from the window, his expression grim. "Boss, Vince has a point about the optics. The Marchetti Syndicate is sniffing around. Everett Marchetti knows we're repositioning capital into medical accounts. He thinks we're preparing for a prolonged turf war, and he's testing our borders on the south side. If they realize our attention is divided over a maid and a kid... they'll make a move."

"Let them move," Weston said, standing up slowly. The crystal glass hit the table with a sharp clink. "Everett Marchetti thinks he can exploit what he perceives as weakness. He thinks compassion is a fatal flaw in the underworld. We are going to teach him how wrong he is."

Weston buttoned his jacket, adjusting his cuffs with clinical precision.

"Tell the strike teams to arm themselves. Tonight, we pay a visit to the Marchetti docks on the river. We are going to show the city that the Kade Syndicate doesn't just protect its own—we bury anyone who dares test us."
