Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

By eleven o'clock that night, the foyer of the Kade estate was pristine once more.

Dominic’s specialized cleanup crew had removed the bodies, sanitized the marble floors, and repaired the bullet holes in the plaster work. To the outside world, the storm had simply blown through Lake Forest without incident.

In the private study, Weston sat behind his large mahogany desk, staring down at three objects resting on the polished leather blotter:

The scrap of embroidered yellow silk from Nadia's blanket.

Detective Vance Miller's rubied signet ring.

An encrypted audio drive recorded from Miller’s tactical radio during the raid.

The study door opened, and Dominic walked in, handing Weston a glass of straight scotch.

"The police department has already reported Detective Miller and his squad missing in action," Dominic reported quietly. "Silas Marchetti is in absolute hysterics at his compound. He’s pulled all his family lieutenants inside his walls and fortified his gates with fifty armed guards."

"And Genevieve?" Weston asked, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid.

"She's locked inside her penthouse apartment on Michigan Avenue," Dominic said. "She tried to book a private flight to London an hour ago, but I had our port authorities flag her passport. She’s trapped in the city."

Weston stood up, walking to the floor-to-ceiling window looking out over the snowy estate.

"The wedding was supposed to be in three weeks," Weston murmured softly. "I think we should move the ceremony up to tomorrow morning."

Dominic raised an eyebrow. "Tomorrow, Boss?"

"Send the audio recording to Silas Marchetti," Weston ordered, his voice dropping into a cold, terrifying register. "Tell him that if he and Genevieve do not meet me at St. Jude Cathedral at ten o'clock tomorrow morning for a private meeting, I will broadcast Miller’s death confession to every federal prosecutor and media outlet in the state."

Dominic smiled—a hard, dark grin. "And what happens at ten o'clock, Boss?"

"The Marchetti family pays their debt," Weston said quietly. "In full."

Downstairs in the wine cellar, the heavy titanium door of the panic room slid open with a soft hiss.

Clara stood inside, holding a sleeping Lily in her arms. She looked up nervously as the door opened, her face brightening with immense relief when she saw Weston standing in the doorway, clean, uninjured, and wearing a fresh wool sweater.

"Is it... is it over?" Clara whispered.

Weston stepped into the room, taking the sleeping four-year-old girl gently out of Clara’s tired arms. He cradled Lily against his chest, his large hand supporting her head as she let out a tiny, soft sigh and snuggled against his shoulder.

"The bad men are gone, Clara," Weston said softly, looking into her eyes. "They will never come near you or Lily ever again."

Clara dropped into the plush armchair, letting out a long, shuddering sob of pure relief, covering her face with her hands.

Weston walked over, sitting on the low edge of the coffee table beside her chair, carrying the sleeping child.

"Clara," Weston said gently, waiting until she uncovered her wet eyes and looked at him. "Tomorrow, the truth about what happened to my wife and daughter will be made public. The people who hurt them will be brought to justice. But after tomorrow... I want you and Lily to stay here."

Clara blinked in surprise. "Stay... stay here at the estate?"

"Not as staff," Weston clarified softly, reaching out to stroke Lily’s small, soft hand. "As family. I want Lily to have the best tutors, the best clothes, and a home where she never has to cut a piece of bread in half again. And I want you to help me bring life back into this house."

May you like

Clara looked at the powerful, terrifying man sitting beside her—the man who had fought an entire army of gunmen to protect her daughter—and saw the gentle, devoted father resting beneath the stone armor.

"We would love to stay, Weston," Clara whispered, a radiant, tearful smile spreading across her face. "We would love to."
