Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By five o'clock that evening, the sky above Lake Forest had turned black with heavy snow clouds. A howling wind whipped through the pine trees surrounding the estate, driving thick white flakes against the tall glass windows.
Inside the basement tactical suite of the mansion, Weston stood before a wall of security monitors alongside Dominic and eight of his most trusted lieutenant commanders.
On the central screen was a live satellite feed of the private estate owned by Silas Marchetti, ten miles away.
"They're mobilizing," Dominic reported, pointing a laser pointer at the screen. "Three unmarked black vans left the Marchetti compound twenty minutes ago. Our road scouts confirm Detective Vance Miller is leading the tactical unit himself. They have twelve heavy combatants armed with automatic weapons."
"Where are they heading?" one of the lieutenants asked.
"Here," Weston answered simply. "They think Clara is an unprotected civilian witness sitting in my staff quarters. They intend to breach the perimeter, liquidate her and her child, make it look like a rival hit, and pin it on a rogue gang."
"Boss," Dominic warned, his face grave. "If Miller brings twelve men with military-grade weapons, this house becomes a warzone. What about Clara and the little girl?"
Weston turned to face his men. "The panic room beneath the wine cellar is sealed with six inches of reinforced titanium plate. It has its own air filtration system and a direct hardline to the state police garrison in Elgin. Clara and Lily will be locked inside before the first tire touches our driveway."
He turned his gaze back to the monitor showing the approaching black vans.
"Dominic," Weston commanded softly. "Cut the outer estate gate power at six o'clock. Leave the front drive completely open. Let them walk all the way to the front door."
"You want them inside the house, Boss?" Dominic asked, his eyes widening.
"I want them in the foyer," Weston said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "I want Silas Marchetti's entire inner circle inside my walls. Because tonight, no one leaves this house in handcuffs. They leave in bags."
Downstairs in the sub-basement wine cellar, Weston personally escorted Clara and Lily to the heavy steel door of the panic room.
The interior was warm, brightly lit, and stocked with plush beds, toys, food, and water for a month.
Lily held her rag doll tight against her chest, looking around at the shiny metal walls with wide curiosity. "Is this a secret room for hide-and-seek?"
Weston knelt in front of her, taking both of her tiny hands in his. "Yes, Lily. It’s the best hide-and-seek room in the world. You and Mommy are going to stay in here for a little while and play a game."
"Are you going to play too?" Lily asked innocently.
Weston smiled—a real, tender smile that softened every hard line of his face. "I have to stay outside and take care of some noise. But when you come out, I have a surprise for you."
"What surprise?" she beamed.
"A real Christmas tree," Weston promised softly. "A tree that touches the ceiling, with golden lights, red ribbons, and twenty presents underneath."
Lily’s mouth formed a little 'O' of pure wonder. "Twenty presents?!"
"Twenty presents," Weston confirmed. He looked up at Clara, his expression turning solemn. "Clara, lock this door from the inside using the silver wheel. Do not open it for anyone except me or Dominic. If you hear loud noises outside, turn on the music system in the corner."
Clara looked into his eyes, tears brimming in hers. "Mr. Kade... please be careful. Don't let them win."
"They lost three years ago, Clara," Weston said, stepping back into the hallway. "They just didn't know it until tonight."

The heavy titanium door slid shut with a deep, hydraulic HISS, the locking bolts snapping into place with three loud, metallic clicks.
Weston turned, pulled a heavy black combat shotgun from the wall rack, racked the slide with a brutal CLACK, and walked up the stone stairs into the dark house.
