Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Sofia

By 4:30 AM, the convoy had returned to the Marquetti estate.

Aldo Falconee was bound to a wooden chair in the center of the underground vaulted wine cellar—a room with four-foot-thick stone walls that had heard the secrets of the family for over a century.

Adrienne stood in front of him, flanked by Donatella Falconee and Clara.

Signora Sofia sat on a stone bench near the wall, her hands trembling as she clutched her lace handkerchief, her face utterly devoid of color.

Aldo spat blood onto the stone floor, a bitter, mocking laugh escaping his lips. "You think you've won, Adrienne? You think you're the smartest man in Naples?"

"I think you're a traitor who sold his family out to the Morettis," Adrienne replied coldly, holding a thick folder containing the seized bank records. "What I want to know is how you knew my exact route eleven months ago when I was ambushed at the docks."

Aldo’s eyes drifted past Adrienne, landing directly on Signora Sofia.

"Ask your mother," Aldo sneered.

The room went deathly silent. The only sound was the slow drip-drip of water from the ceiling pipes.

Adrienne turned slowly, his eyes locking onto his mother with a cold, terrifying intensity that made the older woman flinch.

"Mother?" Adrienne whispered.

"He's lying!" Sofia shrieked, standing up so fast her silk dress rustled wildly. "Adrienne, he's trying to turn us against each other! He’s a cornered rat!"

"She wanted the Falconee alliance three years ago," Aldo said, his voice dripping with malice. "But you refused, Adrienne. You said you didn't trust Donatella. So Sofia came to me. She told me if I could 'create a situation' where you were severely wounded, she could step in as acting boss, sign the merger agreements, and consolidate the shipping lanes herself."

Clara took a sharp breath, her hands flying to her mouth.

"I didn't tell him to kill you!" Sofia sobbed, dropping to her knees on the cold stone floor. "Adrienne, I swear on your father's grave! I only told him to wound you! To make you see that we needed protection! I didn't know he was working with the Morettis!"

"You put a hit on your own son?" Donatella Falconee said, looking at Sofia with pure horror. "You used my brother to stage an attack on your own blood?"

Adrienne stared down at his mother. The pain in his dark eyes was deeper and more absolute than any wound a bullet could ever inflict.

"Eleven months ago," Adrienne said, his voice trembling slightly, "I almost died in that alley. I lay in my own blood while a stranger—a sixteen-year-old girl who owed me nothing—risked her life to keep me breathing."

He turned and looked at Clara, his eyes shining with absolute clarity.

"And while a maid was saving my life," Adrienne continued, looking back down at his kneeling mother, "my own mother was paying the men who put me there. And then, when that same girl came to work in this house, you tried to destroy her because she reminded you of the night your secret almost came out."

"Adrienne... please..." Sofia wept, reaching for his pant leg.

"Get your hands off me," Adrienne commanded softly.

He stepped back, turning his back on his mother completely.

"Guards," Adrienne said. "Escort Signora Sofia to the vehicle. She is to be taken to the secluded villa in Calabria immediately. She will remain there under twenty-four-hour house arrest for the rest of her life. She is never to speak to me, step foot in Naples, or touch a single dollar of the family accounts ever again."
