Chapter 4 - The Shadows in the Nursery

Three weeks passed, and the Hamptons estate began to transform.

The heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the mansion since the death of Declan’s wife, Julianna, a year prior seemed to lift. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the nursery, illuminating new furniture, bright finger-paintings taped to the walls, and a pair of soft, ordinary plush bunnies Emma had bought from a local toy shop in town.

Grace and June were completely different children. Their cheeks had filled out, the dark purple circles under their eyes had faded, and their laughter echoed through the halls once again.

However, the trauma had left its mark. The twins had developed an intense, fierce attachment to Emma. They refused to go to sleep unless Emma was sitting in the armchair beside their bed, and they panicked whenever she left the estate grounds even for a brief grocery run.

Declan sat in his ground-floor office, watching through the security monitor as Emma sat on the sunny back terrace, helping Grace and June tie their shoelaces.

A quiet knock sounded at his door. Viktor stepped in, holding a fresh surveillance report.

"The federal grand jury indicted Meredith and Julian yesterday morning on twelve counts of child endangerment, conspiracy, and wire fraud," Viktor reported. "Their bail was denied. They won't see the light of day for a very long time."

"Good," Declan said, without looking away from the monitor.

Viktor hesitated, stepping closer to the desk. "Boss... we have another issue. The Commission in Chicago is asking questions."

Declan’s eyes narrowed as he slowly turned to his lieutenant. "What kind of questions?"

"Don Dominic Marchetti knows you purged your sister and handed her over to the feds," Viktor explained in a low, cautious voice. "He thinks you're growing soft because of the girls. He believes you used federal law enforcement to solve a family dispute, which violates the old code. He’s calling a summit of the Eastern families in Manhattan next Tuesday."

Declan’s expression turned into a mask of pure stone. Don Marchetti was the undisputed chairman of the regional syndicate board—a ruthless seventy-year-old tyrant who had been waiting for a reason to challenge Declan’s control over the lucrative Atlantic shipping ports ever since Julianna died.

"Marchetti is looking for a weakness, Viktor," Declan said flatly. "He thinks because I was distracted by my daughters' illness, my grip on the territory slipped."

"And if he finds out about Emma?" Viktor asked softly. "If he realizes that a twenty-four-year-old former foster kid is the only person keeping your household together?"

Declan’s jaw clenched. He looked back at the monitor screen. Emma was currently laughing, swinging June around in a circle on the grass while Grace cheered.

"Emma is off-limits," Declan growled, his voice dropping into a deadly register. "Double the perimeter security. If Marchetti sends a single scout near this town, I want them buried in the marsh."

Later that evening, after the girls had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, Emma walked down to the kitchen to make a cup of chamomile tea.

The house was quiet, lit only by low floor lamps. As she turned the corner near the grand staircase, she found Declan standing by the French doors leading to the garden, holding a glass of bourbon, looking out into the dark woods.

"They're sound asleep," Emma said gently, stepping into the dim light.

Declan turned, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the marble floor. He looked at her with an intensity that made Emma’s pulse skip a beat.

"You should be resting, Emma," Declan said, his voice deep and warm in the quiet hallway. "You spend eighteen hours a day caring for them."

"I love them, Declan," Emma said simply, crossing her arms against the cool night breeze drifting through the open window. "They're wonderful children. They just needed someone to protect them."

Declan walked toward her, stopping just two feet away. Up close, the sheer presence of the syndicate boss was overwhelming—the faint scent of expensive leather, cedarwood, and smoke drifting off his clothes.

"I spent a whole year trying to protect them with money, doctors, and guards," Declan whispered, reaching out a hand and gently tucking a stray lock of brown hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her skin, sending a subtle shiver down her spine. "And all they needed was you."

Emma held his gaze, her breath hitching in her throat. For weeks, she had maintained a strict professional boundary, reminding herself every day that Declan Kade was a dangerous man from a violent world. But looking into his gray eyes now, she didn't see a mob boss. She saw a lonely, fierce man who would tear the world apart to keep his children safe.

"Declan..." she murmured.

Before he could answer, the security phone on the wall chimed three sharp times—a code red alert from the main gate.

Declan’s eyes instantly turned back to ice. He pulled his hand back, snatching the receiver off the wall. "Speak."

"Boss!" Viktor’s voice barked over the speaker, laced with gunfire and static. "We have a breach at the south fence! Marchetti’s men just rammed the main gate with an armored van!"
