Chapter 8 - The Renewal

Three months later.

The icy winds of winter had swept across Massachusetts, covering the rolling hills of the Berkshires in a thick, pristine blanket of white snow. Inside the grand manor, however, the atmosphere was warm, radiant, and filled with the sound of laughter.

Luca was now ten months old. He was crawling everywhere at terrifying speed, pulling himself up on furniture, and babbling non-stop.

I stood in the spacious kitchen of the estate, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and jeans, watching Giovanni try to feed Luca his morning oatmeal.

The feared corporate titan, who had once struck terror into the hearts of Wall Street executives, was currently covered in mashed banana and oatmeal. Luca had just slapped the spoon out of his hand, sending a glob of cereal straight onto Giovanni’s expensive designer shirt.

“You’re a tyrant, Luca Moretti,” Giovanni declared with dramatic gravity, wiping his cheek with a napkin. “An absolute tyrant.”

Luca let out a high-pitched, gleeful giggle, clapping his tiny hands together.

I couldn't help but laugh out loud, walking over to hand Giovanni a damp towel. “Need some legal representation, Mr. Moretti? I can sue him for assault with a deadly banana.”

Giovanni looked up at me, his dark eyes crinkling with deep warmth and humor. He took the towel, wiped his face, then pulled me by the waist down onto his lap.

“I think I’d rather settle out of court,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to my neck.

Over the past three months, our lives had undergone a radical transformation. True to his word, Giovanni had stepped down from the operational day-to-day management of Moretti Global, transitioning into an executive chairman role that allowed him to work almost entirely from the Berkshires estate.

He had divested from all high-risk international ventures, transforming the company into a clean, highly respected global investment foundation focused on green infrastructure and medical research. The dark shadows of his past were completely gone, replaced by a life centered entirely around his family.

As for me, I had established my own independent legal consulting practice right from the estate, specializing in pro-bono advocacy for single mothers navigating medical and administrative discrimination—a initiative funded directly by the court damages recovered from the Volkov lawsuit and the Boston General settlement.

Marla Hensley had been stripped of her medical administration certifications and sentenced to community service and probation for her role in the forgery. Boston General’s entire triage protocol had been overhauled, becoming a national model for equitable emergency care.

We were no longer running. We were no longer hiding. We were living.

Later that afternoon, while Luca was down for his nap, Giovanni took my hand and led me out onto the stone terrace overlooking the snow-covered lake. A fire was roaring in the large outdoor stone fireplace, casting a warm, golden glow against the winter afternoon.

“What is all this?” I asked, smiling as I noticed a bottle of vintage champagne resting in an ice bucket near the fire.

Giovanni turned to me, taking both of my hands in his. His hands were warm, steady, and filled with a quiet strength that made me feel completely grounded.

“Fifteen months ago, I thought I lost the only woman I ever truly loved,” Giovanni said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet winter air. “I thought I was condemned to live a cold, lonely life surrounded by money and walls. But when you called me from that emergency room... you gave me a second chance. You gave me a son. You gave me a family.”

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat. Tears instantly filled my eyes.

Giovanni dropped down onto one knee in the crisp snow, opening the box to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the firelight like a blazing star.

“Lauren Grant,” Giovanni said, his voice trembling with profound emotion. “You showed me what true courage is. You protected our son when I wasn't there, and you taught me how to be the man I needed to be. I don't want to live another day without you as my wife. Will you marry me? Not for protection, not for legal convenience, but because you love me as much as I love you?”

I looked down at the man who had fought through hell to protect us, the man who had humbled himself, changed his entire life, and become a magnificent father to our boy.

I dropped to my knees in the snow beside him, wrapping my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder.

May you like

“Yes,” I sobbed happily, kissing his cheek, his lips, his forehead. “Yes, Giovanni! A thousand times yes!”

He slid the ring onto my finger, pulling me into a fierce, passionate embrace as the snow began to fall softly around us like white confetti.
