Chapter 4 - The Public Stage

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the financial world was in an absolute frenzy.
The story had been leaked to the Wall Street Journal and picked up by every major media outlet in North America and Europe. The narrative was sensational: Giovanni Moretti, the enigmatic, fiercely private billionaire head of Moretti Global Enterprises, had a secret seven-month-old son hidden away in Boston with his estranged ex-wife, corporate attorney Lauren Grant.
Worse still, the leak included distorted details about the incident at Boston General, framing it as a desperate bid by an unstable, abandoned mother attempting to extort the Moretti family through a fraudulent emergency room scene.
I stood in the library of the Berkshires estate, watching the news broadcast on a silent television screen mounted on the wall. Below the screen lay a stack of newspapers and printouts of online articles.
SECRET HEIR OR BILLION-DOLLAR EXTORTION? The mysterious illness of Luca Moretti exposes a bitter war between Manhattan titan Giovanni Moretti and his secretive ex-wife.
“They’re framing me,” I said, my voice shaking with pure rage as I pointed at the screen. “They’re making it look like I dragged Luca to the hospital as a publicity stunt to get money from you!”
Giovanni stood near the massive mahogany desk, surrounded by Richard Sterling and three senior public relations executives who had been flown in via private jet at dawn.
“It’s a deliberate character assassination, Lauren,” Richard explained, adjusting his glasses. “Whoever leaked this isn’t just looking for gossip. They are trying to tank Moretti Global’s stock before the quarterly board meeting on Friday. By painting Giovanni’s personal life as chaotic and alleging that he has an illegitimate, contested heir, they are trying to create a crisis of confidence among the institutional shareholders.”
“Who leaked it?” I demanded, turning to Giovanni. “Was it someone in your company? Was it Marla Hensley?”
“Marla Hensley is currently being interrogated by state police regarding corporate bribery,” Giovanni said coldly. “She sold the initial triage note log to a blind broker in London for fifty thousand dollars. But the person who orchestrated the media narrative isn’t a hospital clerk. It’s Dmitry Volkov.”
The name sent a chill down my spine. Dmitry Volkov was the chairman of Volkov Holdings—a Russian conglomerate that had been vying for control of Moretti Global’s Mediterranean shipping routes for three years. Volkov was a ruthless, brutal oligarch who had made several indirect threats against Giovanni during our marriage.
“Volkov wants the board to remove me as CEO on Friday,” Giovanni continued, stepping around the desk toward me. “If he creates enough instability around my estate and my legal authority over my heir, he can convince the conservative board members that I am unfit to lead.”
“So Luca and I are just collateral damage in a corporate board fight?” I spat, fury boiling in my blood. “I spent fifteen months building a reputation in Boston! I’m a corporate litigator! If my name is dragged through the mud like this, my career is completely destroyed!”
“Your career isn't destroyed, Lauren,” Giovanni said firmly. “Because we are going to strike back. Harder than they expect.”
“How?”
Giovanni looked at Richard, who opened a leather folder and presented a draft document.
“A joint press conference,” Richard said. “Tomorrow morning at the Moretti Global Headquarters in Manhattan. You and Giovanni stand together on stage. You present the certified medical reports from Boston General proving the immediate necessity of the emergency care, clear your name of any extortion claims, and officially announce Luca’s birth as a unified family.”
I stared at Richard, then at Giovanni. “A joint press conference? You want me to step directly into the spotlight? Into the very lion's den I ran away from?”
“It is the only way to destroy Volkov’s narrative instantly,” Giovanni said, his voice surprisingly gentle. “If you stay hidden, the media will keep speculating. They will print more lies. They will hunt for photographs of Luca. But if you stand beside me—not as a victim, not as a helpless ex-wife, but as the brilliant attorney and mother you are—we control the narrative entirely.”
“And what about my privacy?” I countered. “What about Luca’s safety?”
“I will deploy my full security detail to protect you both round-the-clock,” Giovanni swore, stepping closer and taking my hands in his. His touch was warm, solid, and utterly reassuring despite the storm brewing around us. “And the moment this press conference is over, I will hand over twenty percent of my voting shares in Moretti Global directly into an irrevocable trust for Luca, with you as the sole trustee.”
I blinked, stunned. “Twenty percent? That’s... that’s control over the entire voting block!”
“It makes you one of the most powerful shareholders in the company,” Giovanni said, locking his eyes with mine. “It gives you the legal authority to veto any decision the board makes regarding our son’s future. I am giving you the power to protect him, Lauren. Even from me, if you ever need to.”
I looked down at our hands. The man who had once hoarded power and control like air was willingly handing me the keys to his kingdom, just to ensure I felt secure.
I thought about the hospital room. I thought about Marla Hensley’s sneering face, the whispering crowds, and the smear campaign currently running on every news channel. I had spent fifteen months hiding, keeping my head down, playing the quiet victim of circumstance.
It hadn't protected my son from a life-threatening fever, and it wasn't protecting him now from a billionaire oligarch’s greed.
I released Giovanni’s hands, pulled back my shoulders, and looked him straight in the eye.
“If we do this, we do it my way,” I said, my lawyer’s demeanor rising to the surface like armor. “I write my own statement. I control the Q&A session. And the moment we step off that stage, Volkov’s legal team gets served with a two-billion-dollar defamation lawsuit signed personally by me.”

A slow, vicious smile spread across Giovanni’s face. The spark of the fierce, unyielding woman he had married was shining brighter than ever.
“Deal,” Giovanni said smoothly. “Let’s go to New York.”
