Chapter 7 - The Offensive

For the next forty-eight hours, the safe room became our universe.
While I stayed hidden with Luca, protected by double-reinforced steel and an elite security force, Giovanni transformed into a war general. The sleek corporate CEO vanished entirely, replaced by the ruthless leader of the Moretti family network.
He didn't leave the penthouse premises. Instead, he turned the main living area into a high-tech command center. Laptops, encrypted radio comms, and satellite tracking feeds covered the Italian marble dining table.
I sat on the edge of the sofa in the living room, holding a sleeping Luca, watching Giovanni direct his operations. He moved with a cold, terrifying efficiency.
“Volkov’s sniper was picked up on NYPD traffic cameras fleeing north toward Westchester,” Richard Sterling reported, looking at a tablet. “Federal authorities are closing in, but Volkov himself is attempting to board his private Gulfstream at Teterboro Airport in forty-five minutes to flee back to Moscow.”
Giovanni stood over the table, his arms leaning on the surface, staring at the satellite feed tracking the private jet on the runway.
“If he reaches international airspace, we’ll never touch him,” Richard added grimly. “And he will spend the rest of his life sending contract killers after you and Lauren.”
“He won't reach international airspace,” Giovanni said coldly. He looked up at Viktor. “Is the FAA clearance block in place?”
“Filed five minutes ago through our contacts at the Department of Homeland Security,” Viktor replied with a dark grin. “His plane is grounded due to an 'unflagged diplomatic security review.' He’s trapped on the tarmac.”
Giovanni stood up straight, buttoning his suit jacket. “Prepare the cars.”
“Giovanni, wait!” I called out, standing up with Luca in my arms.
Giovanni paused, turning to look at me. The icy fury in his eyes softened slightly as he met my gaze.
“You can’t go out there,” I pleaded, taking a step toward him. “If you go to that airport, if you do something illegal or violent, you’ll end up in prison or dead. What happens to Luca then? What happens to us?”
Giovanni walked over to me, stopping right in front of us. He reached out and gently laid his hand on top of Luca’s head, then looked up into my eyes.
“Lauren, I spent fifteen years building an empire, believing that power was about how many people feared me,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “But two nights ago, sitting in that hospital, watching you hold our son, I realized what true power is. It’s the ability to protect the people you love, no matter what it takes.”
“Then don't become a murderer for him!” I cried out softly, tears stinging my eyes. “Don't ruin the life we could have!”
“I’m not going there to kill him, Lauren,” Giovanni promised, his eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unwavering truth. “I’m going there to break him. Legally, financially, and permanently. I’m going to make sure Dmitry Volkov spends the rest of his natural life in a supermax federal prison where he can never harm another soul again.”
He leaned in and kissed my forehead, then gently pressed his lips to Luca’s cheek.
“Stay in the safe room until Viktor calls,” Giovanni instructed softly. “I will finish this today.”
Before I could say another word, he turned and swept out of the penthouse, flanked by six heavily armed guards.
I stood in the quiet room, holding my son close, praying with every fiber of my being that the man I loved would come back to us alive.
An hour later, at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, a dramatic standoff unfolded on the tarmac.
Dmitry Volkov, surrounded by his private bodyguards, was furiously screaming at airport officials near the steps of his Gulfstream jet when four black SUVs sped onto the runway, screeching to a halt in a tight semi-circle, blocking the aircraft entirely.
Giovanni stepped out of the lead vehicle, unhurried and completely calm.
Volkov’s bodyguards immediately reached under their jackets, but before they could draw, ten unmarked black sedans roared onto the tarmac from the opposite direction. Federal agents from the FBI, ATF, and Homeland Security stormed out with assault rifles raised, shouting orders.
“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND NOW!”
Volkov went dead pale. “What is the meaning of this?! I have diplomatic immunity!”
Giovanni walked forward, stopping just outside the police perimeter, holding a thick leather dossier.
“You had diplomatic immunity, Dmitry,” Giovanni said, his voice echoing across the windy tarmac. “Until thirty minutes ago, when the US State Department revoked your visa based on financial evidence of human trafficking, money laundering, and attempted murder.”
An FBI Special Agent in Charge stepped up to Volkov, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto the oligarch’s wrists.
“Dmitry Volkov, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and financing international terrorism,” the agent announced loudly.
Volkov struggled against the cuffs, glaring at Giovanni with pure hatred. “You think you’ve won, Moretti?! My associates will finish what I started! You and your bastard son will never be safe!”
Giovanni walked right up to Volkov, leaning in until his face was inches from the oligarch’s ear.
“My son is a Moretti,” Giovanni whispered, his tone so terrifyingly cold it made the hardened criminal shiver. “And as for your associates... while you were sitting on this tarmac waiting for your plane, my legal and security teams seized every asset, frozen every bank account, and exposed every shell company you own in London, Zurich, and Cyprus. You are penniless, Volkov. You have no money left to pay anyone.”
Volkov’s eyes widened in utter horror as the reality of his total destruction hit him. He wasn't just going to prison—his entire life’s work, his wealth, and his global influence had been completely annihilated in a single afternoon.
The FBI agents dragged the screaming, hysterical oligarch into the back of an armored van and drove away.
Giovanni stood alone on the tarmac, watching the van vanish into the distance. He took a deep, clean breath of the autumn air, pulled out his phone, and dialed my number.
It rang once before I answered.
“Giovanni?” my voice came through the speaker, breathless and filled with anxiety.
“It’s over, Lauren,” Giovanni said softly, a genuine smile finally breaking across his face. “Volkov is in federal custody. The network is completely dismantled. We’re safe. You and Luca are safe.”

On the other end of the line, I sank onto the couch in the penthouse living room, sobbing tears of pure, unadulterated relief.
The nightmare was finally over.
