Chapter 9 - The Clearing of the Name

Three months later.

Spring had come to the Wyoming plains. The snow had melted away, giving way to vast, rolling oceans of green grass under an endless blue sky.

Inside the central auditorium of Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, a formal press conference was taking place.

The Dean of the Medical School and the Chief of Medicine stood behind a wooden podium surrounded by news cameras and medical journalists.

"Three years ago," the Dean announced into the microphones, "this institution made a grave error regarding one of our finest medical professionals. Following a comprehensive federal investigation into synthetic drug distribution, all false charges against Nurse Specialist Willa Vance have been officially wiped clean from her record."

The Dean paused, looking out at the crowd.

"The Maryland State Board of Nursing has fully reinstated Ms. Vance’s license with highest honors, accompanied by a formal public apology from this university for the hardship she endured."

Standing near the side of the stage, watching the broadcast live on a television monitor in the VIP holding room, was Willa.

She was dressed in a simple, beautiful cream-colored dress, holding her official, silver-embossed medical license frame in her hands. Her eyes were moist with quiet tears as three years of shame, poverty, and hiding officially vanished into the past.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Grant pressed a soft kiss against her hair, his warm, solid presence leaning against her.

"How does it feel?" Grant murmured gently into her ear.

Willa turned around in his arms, resting her hands against his chest, looking up into his dark, handsome face.

"It feels... like I can finally breathe again," she whispered, smiling through her tears.

"You deserve every bit of it, Willa," Grant said softly, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "You fought through hell and came out stronger than anyone I've ever known."

He looked into her eyes, his expression shifting from pride to something deeper, warmer, and entirely unshakeable.

"Your one week beneath my roof ended a long time ago, Willa," Grant said softly, his voice dropping into a low, tender hush. "The house feels empty whenever you're not in it. My mother asks about you every morning. And I... I can't imagine my life without you anymore."

Willa’s heart gave a sudden, joyous leap. She reached up, framing his strong jaw with her hands.

"Are you asking me to stay, Grant Harrison?" she asked softly.

"I’m asking you to make the ranch your home," Grant replied, pulling her closer against his heart. "Forever."

Willa smiled, leaning up on her tiptoes, and pressed her lips against his in a sweet, passionate kiss that sealed their future under the vast Wyoming sky.
