Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Plains

By three o'clock in the morning, the snowstorm had reached its peak, burying the roads under three feet of drifting powder.

A convoy of three black, armored Harrison Plains SUVs swept through the massive stone gates of the Harrison Ranch, fifty miles north of Cheyenne. The ranch wasn't just a farm; it was a sprawling, multi-million-dollar estate nestled at the base of the Black Tooth Mountains. The main house was a grand structure of timber, river stone, and floor-to-ceiling glass, surrounded by state-of-the-art security fences, equestrian barns, and private veterinary labs.

Eleanor had been safely admitted under a false name at a private medical clinic in town run by Dr. Thorne’s trusted associate, receiving the antidote under twenty-four-hour guard provided by Grant's private security team.

Grant opened the front door of the main house, stepping into the warm, stone-floored foyer.

Standing near the massive stone fireplace in the great room was Julian Harrison.

At thirty-six, Julian was slimmer than Grant, impeccably groomed in a cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, holding a glass of aged bourbon. Behind him stood two men in expensive gray suits—corporate lawyers from the Harrison Plains legal division.

"Grant!" Julian called out, stepping forward with a look of dramatic concern. "Where the hell have you been?! Delia texted me three hours ago saying you took Mom to some back-alley clinic in Cheyenne! Is she alright? Where is she?!"

Grant walked slowly into the great room, pulling off his heavy leather gloves. He didn't answer right away. He stood in the center of the room, his towering presence casting a long shadow across the rug.

Behind him, Willa stepped into the foyer, still wearing her stained diner coat and her blue uniform, her boots wet with melting snow.

Julian’s eyes flicked over Willa with disgust. "Who is this? Grant, why did you bring a vagrant into the house? What is going on?"

"Delia is currently in protective custody at the county sheriff's department," Grant said, his voice flat, quiet, and deadlier than a loaded gun. "And Mom is in an ICU bed receiving Digibind."

Julian’s glass froze halfway to his lips. "Digi... what?"

"Digoxin antidote," Grant said, stepping closer to his brother. "Mom wasn't dying of heart disease, Julian. Someone was feeding her four times the lethal dose of cardiac glycosides every single day for the past six months. Her blood was so saturated with poison that she was seeing yellow fire in the sky."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward his two lawyers, then back to Grant. He forced a strained, nervous laugh. "Poison? Grant, that’s absurd! Who would poison Mom? She’s the matriarch of this family! Dr. Mercer said—"

"Dr. Mercer was fired an hour ago," Grant interrupted. "And his medical records are currently being seized by federal marshals."

Julian’s face twitched. He swallowed hard, taking a quick gulp of his bourbon. "This is crazy. You've lost your mind, Grant. You're taking the word of some backwoods clinic over certified doctors?"

"She wasn't saved by a backwoods clinic," Grant said, gesturing behind him toward Willa. "She was saved by Willa Vance. A former senior cardiac nurse from Johns Hopkins."

Julian turned his gaze onto Willa. For a fraction of a second, a flash of pure, unadulterated hatred crossed Julian’s features before he smoothed it over with a polished corporate smile.

"A nurse?" Julian scoffed. "If she's a nurse, why was she serving pie in a diner?"

"Because your family's legal team isn't the only one that knows how to destroy people, Mr. Harrison," Willa said smoothly, stepping into the great room. Her eyes scanned the luxurious house with quiet observation—noticing the subtle security cameras, the expensive artwork, and the heavy leather-bound ledgers on the desk in the corner. "Three years ago, I blew the whistle on a high-level pharmaceutical fraud scheme involving synthetic cardiac compounds at a hospital in Baltimore. The company involved was a subsidiary of Harrison Plains Agri-Tech."

Grant snapped his head toward Willa. "What?"

Willa looked Grant dead in the eye. "My medical license was suspended after false evidence of drug theft was planted in my locker. I was blacklisted from every hospital in the country. I ended up on the street, working under the table in small-town diners just to eat."

She turned her gaze to Julian, whose knuckles were turning white around his glass.

"I recognized the symptoms in your mother tonight," Willa continued softly, "because those exact same synthetic digoxin compounds were developed in your Denver research labs three years ago."

Silence crashed down over the room like a falling anvil.
