Chapter 8 - A New Foundation

The morning sun filtered through the tall arched windows of the Ashland Place parlor, now completely redecorated under Maeve’s exclusive direction. The heavy, dark draperies chosen by Celeste had been replaced with light, airy linen; the somber oil portraits of long-dead Ellison patriarchs had been moved to the private archive room, replaced by bright, contemporary botanical prints and framed photographs of Maeve and Iris laughing on Sullivan’s Island.
Maeve sat at her mahogany desk, reviewing the final settlement documents. By the end of the week, the deed to the Ashland Place estate would be transferred entirely into her name, alongside a substantial financial settlement and sole legal custody of Iris.
Iris burst into the study, holding a fistful of freshly picked jasmine flowers from the garden.
"Look, Mommy! I made a bouquet for your desk!"
Maeve smiled, setting her pen aside and lifting her daughter onto her lap. She buried her face in the fragrant white blossoms, inhaling deeply. "They are magnificent, sweet girl. You have the best eye for flowers in all of Charleston."
"Can we go to the beach today?" Iris asked eagerly. "Just you and me?"
"We can do anything you want," Maeve answered, wrapping her arms securely around her daughter.

She looked out the window toward the wrought-iron gates. A delivery truck was passing by, indifferent to the history of the house, the ruined dynasty of the Ellison men, or the quiet revolution that had taken place within these walls.
Maeve had arrived in Charleston five years ago as a bride expected to blend into the background of a powerful family. Now, she stood as the sole master of her domain—unbroken, unapologetic, and completely victorious.
