Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of the Estate

By mid-summer, the legal divorce proceedings were moving swiftly through the private mediation chambers of Katherine Vance’s firm.

Conrad’s legal team attempted to contest the division of assets, arguing that the Ashland Place estate was historically tied to the Ellison lineage. But Katherine countered with a devastating counter-suit highlighting corporate commingling of Palmetto Heritage Foundation funds with private accounts used to finance Conrad’s extramarital lifestyle—specifically, the lease on a luxury condo in downtown Charleston where Bianca Vale had been residing.

When the financial audit report was leaked to Conrad’s senior business partners, the board of the foundation forced his resignation as vice president, citing "conduct detrimental to institutional integrity."

Bianca Vale, realizing that Conrad was no longer a wealthy kingmaker but a disgraced executive embroiled in a high-profile divorce, packed her designer bags and moved back to Atlanta, leaving behind a text message to Conrad that was as cold as it was brief: This isn't what I signed up for.

Conrad tried calling Maeve twice. Both times, her phone sent his number straight to her attorney's archive folder. There was nothing left to discuss between them except the final signatures on the property transfer deeds.
