Chapter 4 - The Merciless War

By Monday morning, forty-eight hours after the tragic events in the hospital room, Mercer Island was hit by a legal and financial tsunami.

Robert Bennett sat in his spacious mahogany office at Bennett Global Logistics—the regional freight and supply-chain corporation his father had founded fifty years ago.

He was drinking his fourth black coffee, his eyes bloodshot, his phone ringing continuously off the hook.

Marjorie had been released on a fifty-thousand-dollar cash bail late Sunday night, but the conditions of her release were brutal. The judge had issued an immediate, temporary Protection From Abuse (PFA) order, legally barring her from approaching within one thousand feet of Claire, Daniel, or their five-year-old daughter, Sophie. She was also forced to surrender her passport.

The door to Robert’s office crashed open.

Marjorie walked in, her face pale, no longer wearing her grand silver gown, but dressed in an oversized beige sweater that made her look small, withered, and mean. Vanessa followed close behind her, weeping into a handkerchief.

"Robert!" Marjorie demanded, slamming her designer handbag onto his desk. "Why hasn't Marcus Sterling returned your calls?! Why is the corporate bank account showing an administrative hold?!"

Robert slowly looked up from his desk, his face gray as ashes.

"Marcus Sterling isn't returning my calls, Marjorie," Robert said, his voice flat and dead, "because Marcus Sterling no longer represents Bennett Global Logistics."

Marjorie froze. "What are you talking about? He’s been our family attorney for fifteen years!"

"He resigned this morning," Robert said, tapping his computer screen. "Because he was retained by your son."

"Daniel?!" Vanessa cried out. "Daniel hired Marcus against us?!"

"Not just against us, Vanessa," Robert said, his hand trembling as he picked up a thick stack of legal documents that had been served to his secretary twenty minutes earlier. "Daniel is a senior corporate auditor. He has been the chief financial controller of Bennett Global’s trust assets for six years."

Robert looked at Marjorie with a look of pure, agonizing horror.

"Daniel used his administrative clearance this morning to trigger a full, independent forensic audit of the company," Robert revealed, his voice shaking. "He submitted evidence to the Internal Revenue Service showing that you, Marjorie, have been siphoning over three hundred thousand dollars a year from the company’s charitable trust to fund your private shopping accounts, your country club fees, and Vanessa’s wedding!"

Marjorie’s breath hitched in her throat. "That... that was family money! My father founded that company!"

"It is tax fraud, Marjorie!" Robert roared, slamming his palms against the desk as he stood up. "It is federal embezzlement! Daniel knew every single loophole because I taught him! And he handed the entire paper trail directly to the federal prosecutor’s office at eight o'clock this morning!"

Vanessa started sobbing harder. "What about my wedding gifts?! What about my honeymoon in Fiji?!"

"There is no honeymoon, Vanessa!" Robert screamed at his daughter. "The venue is suing us for eighty thousand dollars in breach of contract and property damage! The press is sitting outside our driveway! Our corporate board of directors has just called an emergency meeting for two o'clock to vote on removing me as Chief Executive Officer!"

Marjorie stepped back, stumbling against the leather armchair, her hand clutching her chest.

For thirty years, she had ruled her family through terror, manipulation, and financial dominance. She had broken three of Daniel’s previous girlfriends, bullied her husband into compliance, and turned her daughter into a spoiled carbon copy of herself.

She had believed she was untouchable.

She had believed Daniel was a weak, obedient boy who would always come home to beg for her approval.

She didn't know that the quiet, gentle auditor she had spent years pushing around had been taking notes the entire time—and he had just pulled the pin on a grenade that was about to blow her entire world to pieces.
