Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The sound that erupted from Daniel’s throat was not human. It was the raw, primal roar of a man watching the person he loved most being tortured right in front of his eyes.
He didn't hesitate. He didn't reason. He didn't waste a single second attempting to mediate or negotiate.
Daniel grabbed Marjorie by the shoulders, his large hands sinking into the padded silver fabric of her custom wedding gown, and yanked her backward with terrifying force. She lost her footing on the slick linoleum floor, her jeweled hat slipping sideways, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as her son hurled her completely away from my bed.
She hit the wall near the washbasin with a loud, hollow thud, staggering to keep her balance.
"Get out!" Daniel screamed, his body trembling violently, stepping directly between Marjorie and my bed. His face was flushed crimson, the gentle, controlled husband I had known for seven years vanishing completely. "Get your hands off my wife, you insane monster!"
I was sobbing, double over in my bed, clutching my abdomen as fresh, searing agony ripped through my stitches. Warm blood was already soaking through the white cotton blanket, staining the sheets in a dark, terrifying flower. The heart monitor beside my bed began to scream in rapid, continuous high-pitched beeps as my heart rate spiked into dangerous territory.
Marjorie adjusted her crooked hat, her face contorted with an unholy mixture of rage and wounded pride. "How dare you?!" she shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at her son. "How dare you put your hands on your mother! Look at what she's doing! She's faking it! She's ruining Vanessa's morning on purpose—"
"She is bleeding, you psychopathic woman!" Daniel roared, turning his head slightly to yell into the corridor. "NURSE! SECURITY! GET IN HERE NOW!"
The bathroom door was swinging on its hinges. Within three seconds, two registered nurses burst into the room, followed immediately by a towering, broad-shouldered hospital security officer.
"What's going on in here?!" the lead nurse shouted, her eyes dropping instantly to the bright crimson puddle spreading across my hospital gown and sheets. "Oh my God! Her incision has dehisced!"
"She attacked her," Daniel gasped, his breath coming in ragged, desperate hitches as he pointed at Marjorie. "She came in here, grabbed my wife by the hair, and intentionally slammed her hand onto her surgical wound!"
The security guard didn't wait for a formal invitation. He stepped across the room, grabbing Marjorie firmly by both arms.
"Un-hand me!" Marjorie shrieked, kicking her silver heels against the floor as if she were a spoiled child being dragged from a toy store. "Do you have any idea who I am?! My husband is Robert Bennett! We are major donors to this medical network! I will have you fired! I will have this entire floor shut down!"
"You're going to jail, lady," the security guard said coldly, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sharp, metallic click. "You just assaulted a post-operative surgical patient in a medical facility. Move!"
"Daniel!" Marjorie screamed as the guard dragged her backward toward the hallway, where dozens of doctors, nurses, and visiting family members were gathering to watch the spectacle. "Daniel, tell him! Stop them! I am your mother! Vanessa is waiting at the altar!"
Daniel didn't even turn his head to look at her.
He dropped to his knees beside my bed, his hands hovering over mine, his eyes swimming with tears. "Claire... Claire, stay with me. Look at me, sweetie. Look at my eyes."
"It hurts..." I choked out, my vision swimming in terrible, blinding white spots as the room spun out of control. "Daniel... it hurts so bad..."
"Emergency surgical consult right now!" the charge nurse yelled into her wall radio. "Patient in Room 412 has suffered violent wound dehiscence with massive arterial bleeding! Prep Operating Room Two!"
Medical staff swarmed the room like a tactical unit. They ripped away the blood-soaked blankets, pressing heavy sterile sponges onto my abdomen with agonizing pressure. I screamed into the oxygen mask someone shoved over my face.
Through the haze of blinding pain and the chaotic yelling of the trauma team, my hand found Daniel's collar. I gripped his loose tie so hard my knuckles turned white.
"Don't... don't let her back in," I sobbed through the mask.
Daniel took my face in both of his trembling hands, leaning down until his forehead rested against mine. Tears fell from his cheeks, landing hot against my skin.

"She will never touch you again, Claire," Daniel whispered, his voice steadying into something cold, dark, and utterly unbroken. "I swear to you on my life. She is dead to us."
As they wheeled my bed at a breakneck sprint through the double doors into the surgical corridor, my last sight was of Daniel standing in the hallway, covered in my blood, watching his mother being shoved into the back of a police cruiser through the glass windows of the lobby.
