Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

While Clara and Sebastian were exchanging their vows in front of three thousand roaring guests and a global audience of millions, the atmosphere at the New York Public Library across town was decaying into complete chaos.
Tristan stood at the altar beside Vanessa, but the priest was rushing through the ceremony like a man trying to catch a departing train. The grand hall of the library, built to hold a thousand guests, was barely a quarter full. Empty golden chairs sat in long, painful rows.
"Do you, Tristan..." the priest began nervously.
Before Tristan could say "I do," the heavy wooden doors at the back of the library were pushed open with a loud bang.
Four men in dark suits carrying leather briefcases walked down the center aisle, accompanied by two officers from the United States Marshals Service.
The few guests remaining gasped in shock.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Beatrice Carmichael stood up, shouting at the intruders. "This is a private wedding!"
The lead federal officer stepped up to the front row, pulling a signed court document from his coat. "Richard Carmichael? Tristan Carmichael?"
Tristan’s father stood up, his face gray. "Yes?"
"We are serving you with an emergency federal injunction and asset freeze," the marshal stated loudly, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "The European Banking Syndicate, acting on behalf of the Claremont Royal Trust, has declared Carmichael Global Enterprises in default of sixty million dollars in overdue credit facilities. Effective immediately, all corporate accounts, real estate holdings, and personal assets tied to the firm are seized."
A collective gasp ripped through the empty library rows.
Vanessa spun around, her eyes wild with terror. She grabbed Tristan by his collar. "What did he say?! Tristan! Is your family broke?!"
Tristan looked like a corpse standing in a tux. "Vanessa... I..."
Vanessa shoved him away with such force that he stumbled back against the floral altar, knocking over a tower of five-thousand-dollar imported white orchids.
"You liar!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing hysterically. "You used me! You brought me into this circus to save your pathetic, bankrupt family!"
She ripped off her veil, threw it directly into Tristan’s face, and stormed down the aisle in her heavy bridal gown, shouting for her driver.
Beatrice Carmichael clutched her chest, groaning as she collapsed back onto her seat. The photographer Tristan had hired to document his "triumph" accidentally captured every single second of the meltdown on high-definition video.

Within twenty minutes, the footage of Tristan Carmichael’s ruined wedding was uploaded to the internet.
The contrast was brutal: on one channel, Clara Higgins was kissing her prince under a shower of golden flower petals at St. Patrick's Cathedral to the cheers of thousands; on the other channel, Tristan Carmichael was standing alone in an empty library, covered in crushed orchids, being handed a federal bankruptcy notice.
