Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The morning after the Met Gala, the media exploded into a absolute frenzy. Front pages from New York to London featured side-by-side photos: on the left, Clara’s heartrending breakdown at the Plaza Hotel three years ago; on the right, Clara stepping out of a royal Maybach looking like modern royalty.

“THE PLAZA BRIDE RETURNS WITH A PRINCE,” screamed the headlines.

Inside the penthouse of the Carlyle, Clara sat at a glass dining table sipping tea with Sebastian. On the tablet in front of them, stock tickers showed Carmichael Global Enterprises taking a sharp six-percent dip in pre-market trading. Investors were unsettled by the mysterious presence of European nobility alongside the woman Tristan Carmichael had so publicly publicly humiliated.

Suddenly, Sebastian’s phone rang. It was his father, the Duke of Claremont.

"Father," Sebastian said in his native German before switching to clear English for Clara's benefit. "Is the council prepared?"

"The board of European creditors has officially put the Carmichael bridge loan on permanent hold," the Duke’s deep, regal voice resounded through the speaker. "Furthermore, the Mayor of New York has just approved your permit request for Fifth Avenue. My son, the Grand Ducal Guard is mobilized. We will arrive in New York three days before the ceremony."

"Thank you, Father," Sebastian said, glancing at Clara with a look of resolute determination.

While Sebastian solidified their logistical stronghold, Clara spent her afternoons preparing her ultimate counterstroke. She visited Mikhail’s small restoration shop in Brooklyn—not to hide, but to recruit.

"Mikhail," Clara said, leaning over the dusty workbench where her old mentor was repairing a 19th-century oil painting. "I need you to help me restore something bigger than a painting."

The old Russian raised an eyebrow, a warm smile crinkling his eyes. "Ah, little bird. You are not hiding anymore. I saw the papers. You found a prince, yes?"

"I found a man who respects me," Clara corrected softly. "And together, we are going to fix a historical wrong."

Clara commissioned Mikhail to restore a centuries-old Claremont family artifact—a gilded royal registry ledger dating back to the 1700s. She planned to sign her name into history on the very same day Tristan intended to parade his hollow wealth at the New York Public Library.

Meanwhile, panic was setting in at the Carmichael estate in Upper East Side.

Beatrice Carmichael paced across her marble living room, slapping a copy of the New York Post onto the glass coffee table. "How is this possible?!" she shrieked at Tristan, who sat slumped in a leather armchair with a glass of scotch in his trembling hand. "She was an art restorer from Ohio! A nobody! How did she capture the heir to Claremont-Bavaria?!"

"I don't know, Mother!" Tristan snapped, his knuckles white around his glass. "It has to be a stunt. She’s using him to get back at us!"

"It doesn't matter," Vanessa Rutherford chimed in coldly from the sofa, inspecting her manicure. "My family controls thirty percent of North American shipping routes. A broke European prince and a fake social climber aren't going to outshine our wedding at the Public Library. October twelfth is our day."

"You don't understand, Vanessa," Richard Carmichael, Tristan's father, said as he walked into the room, looking visibly aged. "The bank just pulled our line of credit. The firm holding our debt is owned by the House of Claremont. If this Prince Sebastian decides to execute those loans on October twelfth... we are bankrupt."

Tristan’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the pristine marble floor.
