Chapter 8 - The Legal Avalanche

The heavy double doors of the grand salon burst open, and Licenciado Benjamin Mendoza stepped into the room, followed by a senior judicial notary and four uniformed officers of the Guardia Civil.

The guests automatically moved aside, their expressions gripped by the raw drama unfolding before them. The classical elegance of the gala had transformed into a courtroom execution.

"Don Álvaro Castillo," Mendoza said, presenting a thick, stamped legal dossier. "The board of trustees of the Castillo Charter has fully reviewed the evidence of both financial treason and moral turpitude. By the unilateral authority granted to you under the Cain Clause, the prenuptial agreement is formally declared null and void due to systemic bad-faith execution."

Mendoza turned toward Veronica, who was still weeping on the marble floor.

"Veronica Mercer," the attorney read from the document, his voice cold and precise. "As of 9:15 PM tonight, your marital status is legally revoked. You have zero claim to any asset, land, currency, or property bearing the Castillo name. Furthermore, a permanent asset freeze has been executed on your Swiss accounts by order of the federal magistrate in Madrid. You are currently entirely bankrupt."

The two federal officers stepped forward, bypassing Veronica and moving directly to her father, Narciso. The silver-tipped cane was knocked from his hand as the officers forced his arms behind his back, the heavy steel handcuffs snapping shut with a brutal clarity.

"Narciso Mercer," the lead officer declared. "You are under arrest for federal document forgery, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit corporate fraud. You will be transported to the provincial detention facility in Toledo immediately."

"No! You can't do this to me!" Narciso screamed as he was dragged down the marble corridor, his expensive shoes scraping against the stone. "Veronica! Do something! Call the lawyers!"

But Veronica couldn't move. Her mother, Ramona, was currently trying to slip out through the rear terrace doors to avoid the cameras, completely abandoning her daughter to the wolves.

The female officer stepped up to Veronica, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. "Stand up, Ms. Mercer. You are not under arrest yet, but you are required to leave this property immediately under the terms of the judicial eviction order. You have zero right of habitation."

Veronica looked up at Álvaro, her eyes red, her makeup ruined, looking like a ghost of the glamorous woman who had entered the room an hour prior. "Álvaro... please... it’s dark outside. It’s raining again. Where am I supposed to go? I don't have my cards... I don't have any money..."

Álvaro turned his back to her, stepping beside his mother’s chair. He picked up his glass of the 1975 Grand Reserve wine and held it up to the light.

"You told my mother that money decides who matters here, Veronica," Álvaro said, his voice quiet, calm, and definitive. "And you told her that old women belong where the animals eat. You don't matter anymore. Take her out."

The officer pulled Veronica to her feet and escorted her out through the grand entrance hall. The guests watched in absolute silence as she was marched down the long gravel driveway in her bare feet, her expensive blue gown dragging through the wet mud left behind by the afternoon storm—a perfect, poetic mirror of the humiliation she had inflicted on Doña Elena.
