Chapter 5 - The Price of Treason

Thursday morning brought a cold rain over Toledo, darkening the ancient stone walls of the estate. Inside a private conference room at the Banco de Castilla, Álvaro sat at the head of a long glass table. Across from him were the regional director of the bank, the head of forensic auditing, and Licenciado Mendoza.
"The evidence is definitive, Don Álvaro," the forensic auditor said, sliding a thick bound binder across the table. "Your wife has been utilizing a falsified corporate stamp to authorize secondary drawdowns on the vineyard’s operational credit line. She didn't just spend the four hundred thousand euros you found on luxury goods; she has also committed signature forgery to secure a private loan of two million euros against the title of the southern production facilities."
The room went completely still. Even Mendoza looked shocked by the audacity of the crime.
"She used my father's old signature templates from the archived digital files, didn't she?" Álvaro asked, his voice flat, showing no emotional variance.
"Yes," the auditor confirmed. "The funds were deposited into a private account at a Swiss branch in Zurich registered under her maiden name, Veronica Mercer y Alvear. Her father, Narciso, appears as the secondary guarantor on the loan. They were planning to fully draw down the funds by Monday morning, likely expecting that your international travel schedule would keep you from noticing the quarterly audit until October."
Álvaro turned his gaze to the bank director. "Is the loan currently fully funded?"
"The capital is sitting in our holding clearing escrow, waiting for the final validation stamp from your office tomorrow afternoon, Don Álvaro," the director explained, his hands sweating slightly. "Because you are the sole legal administrator of the trust that holds the land title, the loan cannot be executed without your thumbprint validation on the digital deed registry."
"Excellent," Álvaro said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Do not cancel the loan transaction yet. Let Veronica and her father believe the funds are moving smoothly. Let them see the pending status on their online banking apps. I want them to feel the weight of two million euros within their grasp."
"And tomorrow night?" Mendoza asked, his pen hovering over the final eviction and arrest authorization forms.
"Tomorrow night, we host the grandest gala the Castillo family has ever seen," Álvaro said, a dark, brilliant smile finally touching his lips. "We will have the finest food, the most exclusive wine, and the most spectacular entertainment. I will personally deliver the validation stamp... but it won't be for the loan."
By the time Álvaro returned to the estate late that evening, the rain had stopped, replaced by a thick, clinging fog. He walked through the main salon, where Veronica was supervising the installation of a massive crystal chandelier above the dance floor.
"Ah, Álvaro," she said carelessly, gesturing toward a stack of silver-gilded invitations on the table. "The caterers need your digital signature for the final wine release from the private cellar. Don't forget to do it before you go to sleep."
"I’ve already released the vintage, Veronica," Álvaro said quietly, stopping at the base of the grand staircase. "I chose the 1975 Grand Reserve. The one my father bottled the year he married my mother."
Veronica paused, a slight flicker of irritation crossing her face. "Isn't that a bit too historic for these corporate buyers? They want modern, sleek presentation."
May you like
"The 1975 reserve is an incredible vintage, Veronica," Álvaro murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with a sudden, intense focus that made her breath catch for a microsecond. "It has a very complex finish. It tastes of patience... and absolute ruin for anyone who doesn't understand its value."
Before she could question his strange wording, he turned and walked up the stairs, disappearing into the shadows of the upper corridor.
