Chapter 6 - The Arrival of the Elite

Friday evening arrived with the clarity of a autumn diamond. The estate was transformed into a paradise of light and sound. Hundreds of string lights illuminated the ancient olive trees, and a classical string quartet played elegantly near the marble fountain.

The elite of Toledo and Madrid began to arrive at 7:30 PM. Luxury sports cars and chauffeured limousines lined the long, gravel driveway. The guests were greeted by impeccable waitstaff serving vintage champagne on silver trays.

Veronica stood at the entrance of the grand salon, looking breathtaking in a custom-made, midnight-blue silk gown that cost more than a senior housekeeper’s annual salary. Her diamonds flashed under the massive crystal chandeliers, and her parents stood beside her, beaming with the unearned pride of royalty.

"Ah, Mayor Alvear!" Veronica gushed, stepping forward to press her cheek against the politician’s wife’s face. "Welcome, welcome. Álvaro is inside finalizing some production metrics with the Italian delegates, but he will join us shortly. Please, enjoy the 1975 reserve."

"You’ve outdone yourself, Veronica," the Mayor smiled, looking around the opulent room. "The Castillo estate has never looked more prosperous. Your father tells me you’ve been taking a very active role in the corporate management."

"Someone has to maintain the standards, Mayor," Narciso chimed in, leaning heavily on his silver-tipped cane, his eyes gleaming with greed. "Álvaro is a wonderful boy, but he lacks the... administrative flair that my daughter possesses. We are actually expanding the infrastructure next week."

In the back corner of the salon, hidden behind a large floral arrangement, Sofia and three other senior maids stood with perfect posture, their expressions completely neutral. They watched as Veronica expanded her chest with pride, completely unaware of the trapdoor beneath her feet.

"She has no idea," one of the younger maids whispered under her breath.

"Keep your face still, Maria," Sofia hissed quietly, her eyes fixed on the grand staircase. "The young master is coming."

At exactly 8:30 PM, the string quartet stopped playing. A sudden, expectant silence fell over the room as the heavy double doors at the top of the grand staircase swung open.

Álvaro appeared, looking impeccably handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo. But he wasn't alone.

Resting gently on his right arm was Doña Elena. She was dressed in a magnificent, heavy black lace traditional Spanish gown, her white hair styled into an elegant chignon, secured by a solid gold comb that had belonged to the Castillo family for three generations. Around her shoulders was the silk shawl Álvaro had bought her—now completely pristine, ironed, and smelling of rich lavender. She walked with a slow, regal grace, her head held high, her eyes clear and completely devoid of the fear that had defined her for months.

The guests inside the salon gasped, a murmur of deep respect rippling through the crowd. Many of the older aristocrats in the room had known Don Arturo and Doña Elena for forty years; they instantly recognized the matriarch of the estate.

Veronica’s smile froze so hard her jaw ached. Her face turned an ash-gray color beneath her expensive makeup. She turned to her mother, her voice a furious, panicked whisper. "What is she doing here? Who let her out? I ordered her to stay in the guest house!"

Before Ramona could answer, Álvaro and Doña Elena reached the base of the staircase. The guests automatically parted to clear a path for them, applauding softly in deference to the elder woman.

"Elena, my dear!" the Mayor’s wife cried, stepping forward and taking the old woman’s hands with genuine warmth. "We haven't seen you in months! Veronica told us you were far too frail to receive visitors!"

"I have been resting, Victoria," Doña Elena said, her voice steady and resonant, echoing clearly across the silent room. "But my son reminded me that a Castillo never hides when there is a celebration of our family’s honor."

Álvaro stepped to the center of the room, standing right beneath the massive crystal chandelier. He looked at his wife, his face carrying a polite, deadly calm smile.

"Good evening, everyone," Álvaro said, his voice easily commanding the space. "Before we begin the wine tasting, I need to invite my wife, Veronica, and her father, Narciso, to join me at the presentation screen. We have a very special corporate announcement regarding the future of the Castillo holding company."
