Chapter 9 - The Path to Healing

Two years passed.
Under Sophie’s leadership as CEO, Vance Global became a global powerhouse for ethical investment, funding hospitals, schools, and housing projects across the Midwest.
Leo was six years old now—a bright, happy boy who excelled in school and loved riding horses at the family estate.
One sunny spring afternoon, Sophie was driving her SUV through a quiet, small town in rural Indiana, sixty miles outside Chicago.
She had come to inspect a site for a new children's hospital funded by her foundation.
As she drove down a quiet country road, she passed a small wooden workshop labeled Russo Custom Woodworking.
She slowed the car to a crawl, looking through the open barn doors.
Inside stood Henry.
He looked completely transformed. He wore a faded flannel shirt, denim jeans covered in sawdust, and work boots. His face was weathered by the sun, but the dark, tormented look in his eyes was gone, replaced by a quiet, subdued calm.
He was carefully hand-carving a wooden rocking horse for a local charity drive.
Sophie stopped the car at the edge of the driveway.
Henry looked up, wiping sawdust from his forehead with his sleeve. He saw the black SUV and froze.
Sophie stepped out of the car, wearing a simple summer dress, her dark hair blowing gently in the warm spring breeze.
Henry set his carving tools down, stepping out into the sunlight. He didn't look afraid, nor did he look angry. He simply stood there, humbled and quiet.
"Sophie," Henry said softly. "What brings you to Indiana?"
"Business for the hospital," Sophie replied, walking slowly toward the workshop.
She looked around the simple barn. Shelves were stacked with handcrafted wooden toys, chairs, and tables. There were no armed guards, no luxury cars, no dirty money.
"You built all this?" Sophie asked, touching the smooth maple of a toy train.
"It keeps my hands busy," Henry said gently. "I donate most of it to the local orphanage. It... it helps me sleep at night."
Sophie looked into his eyes. For the first time in seven years, she saw no mafia boss, no ruthless heir, no arrogant tyrant. She saw a man who had stripped away his own darkness to rebuild his soul from scratch.
"Does he know about me?" Henry asked quietly, his voice filled with soft hesitation.
Sophie knew he meant Leo.

"He knows his father made terrible mistakes," Sophie answered honestly. "He knows his father walked away so that Leo could grow up safe."
Henry swallowed back a tear, nodding slowly. "That’s... that’s enough. That’s all I could ever ask for."
