Chapter 10 - A Legacy of Peace

Three months later.
On a warm Saturday afternoon at the Vance Estate in Lake Forest, the sun shone brightly over the lush green gardens.
Victor Vance sat on the patio, enjoying a game of chess with Dante, while soft music played from the terrace speakers.
A new wooden package arrived at the front gates, addressed directly to Leo Banner.
Sophie took the package to the lawn where Leo was playing with his golden retriever.
"Leo, a gift arrived for you in the mail," Sophie called out with a warm smile.
Leo ran over, excited. "Is it from Uncle Victor?"
"No," Sophie said gently, helping him open the soft burlap wrapping.
Inside was a breathtaking, hand-carved wooden chess set made of polished mahogany and white oak. Every single piece was sculpted with extraordinary detail, the bases lined with soft green velvet.
Attached to the king piece was a small, hand-written wooden tag:
To Leo. May every move you make in life be guided by honor, strength, and love. — A Friend.
Leo picked up the knight piece, admiring its smooth finish. "Mommy, this is amazing! Who made this?"
Sophie looked out toward the distant horizon, picturing the quiet workshop in Indiana, picturing the man who had traded an empire of blood for a life of quiet redemption.
She smiled—a genuine, peaceful smile that warmed her entire soul.
"Someone who learned that the greatest victory in life isn't power, Leo," Sophie whispered, wrapping her arm around her son’s shoulders. "It's becoming a better man."
Leo placed the chess set on the garden table, setting up the pieces with a bright, enthusiastic smile. "Mommy, play a game with me!"
"I’d love to, my sweet prince," Sophie replied, sitting down across from him under the warm summer sun.
The nightmare of the blizzard was gone forever. The pain of the past had been transformed into strength.
