Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Russo Empire

The next morning at 10:00 AM, a press conference was held outside the Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago.

Over fifty news crews assembled as Henry Russo stepped up to the microphones.

He looked hollowed out, dressed in a simple dark suit without a tie, his hands calm and steady.

"Effective immediately," Henry announced to the nation, his voice firm, "the Russo Group is dissolving all corporate operations. One hundred percent of our commercial assets, land holdings, and private funds are being donated to the Vance Charitable Foundation."

The reporters erupted into frantic shouting.

"Mr. Russo! Are you retiring?!" "Is this a plea deal with the Department of Justice?!" "What about the claims of organized crime?!"

Henry looked straight into the central news camera—knowing Sophie was watching from her penthouse suite.

"I am stepping down from public life," Henry stated clearly. "I am leaving Chicago today. I have no claims, no estates, and no legacy. I leave everything to the people I have wronged."

He turned and walked down the stone steps of the courthouse, ignoring the chaotic flashbulbs, stepping into a simple taxi cab, leaving his empire behind forever.

Meanwhile, in the penthouse suite, Victor Vance turned off the television.

He looked at Sophie, who was standing by the window with a cup of coffee.

"He actually did it," Victor said, impressed. "He stripped himself of every cent, every piece of power, and signed the parental waiver. The Russo family is officially history."

Sophie stared out at the city. A small, subtle weight seemed to lift from her chest, but her face remained thoughtful.

"Is he leaving the city?" Sophie asked.

"Dante monitored him," Victor replied. "He bought a small, one-bedroom cottage in rural Indiana. He took nothing but a single suitcase of clothes."

Victor walked over, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "You got your revenge, Victoria. You brought him to his knees and made him beg for mercy. Are you at peace?"

May you like

Sophie looked down at her hands—the hands that used to clean floors, now holding the reins of a financial empire.

"Revenge doesn't bring back the night I almost lost my baby, Victor," Sophie whispered softly. "But justice gives my son a future."
