Chapter 7 - The Shadow over the Harbor

With Caldwell’s confession in their hands, the Russo syndicate moved with lethal efficiency. Within forty-eight hours, federal agents—acting on anonymous, highly detailed tips provided by Nicholas’s legal team—raided three major warehouses owned by the Marcone family, seizing over fifty million dollars worth of illicit contraband and arresting twenty of Marcone’s top lieutenants.
The Marcone empire was crumbling, stripped of its cash flow and its political protection. But a cornered rat is always the most dangerous.
One afternoon, while Nicholas was reviewing security reports in his study, Claire walked in carrying his afternoon medication. As she placed the small cup on his desk, the mansion’s main alarms began to blare—a low, rhythmic crimson flash that lit up the stone walls.
The heavy mahogany doors flew open, and Marcus burst in, his body armor covered in fresh dust. "Boss, we've got a perimeter breach. It’s a coordinated assault. Marcone has brought in a team of foreign mercenaries. They’ve bypassed the main gate using heavy explosives. They know they're done for, and they're trying to take you down with them."
Nicholas stood up from his desk, his recovery nearly complete. He didn't show a single shred of panic. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a sleek, customized silver pistol, checking the magazine with an expert click.
"Marcus, activate the bunker protocol," Nicholas commanded. "Get the staff into the safe rooms. Where is Dr. Vance?"
"Leo is already secure in the clinic basement, sir," Marcus replied, drawing his own weapon. "But they’re targeting the main house. We need to move you now."
"Claire, come with me," Nicholas said, wrapping his large hand around hers. His grip was incredibly warm, solid, and protective.
As they hurried down the grand corridor toward the secure elevator, the massive glass walls of the sitting room suddenly shattered inward. A flashbang grenade erupted with a deafening bang, filling the space with blinding white light and a high-pitched ring.
Three masked gunmen clad in black tactical gear burst through the broken frame, their submachine guns raised. Marcus immediately opened fire, dropping the first man with two precise shots to the chest. But the second gunman swung his weapon toward Nicholas and Claire.
Without a second thought, Nicholas threw his body in front of Claire, spinning her behind a massive marble pillar as a hail of bullets chipped away the stone, showering them in sparks and fragments.
Nicholas leaned out from behind the pillar, firing three rapid shots. The second gunman dropped, but the third managed to fire a wild spray before Marcus neutralized him from the flank.
Claire pressed her back against the pillar, her breath coming in short, gasps. She looked down and saw a dark, spreading stain of crimson on Nicholas's left shoulder. The stitches from his previous surgery were intact, but a new bullet had grazed his collarbone, blood soaking through his silk shirt.
"Nicholas! You're hit!" she cried out, her nursing instincts instantly taking over the terror.
"It’s a scratch, Claire," Nicholas gasped, his face tight with pain but his eyes remaining fixed on the corridor ahead. "We need to get to the elevator before the second wave arrives."
May you like
"No, it's not a scratch, you're bleeding out from the subclavian area!" Claire yelled, tearing a strip of fabric from her own cardigan and pressing it firmly against the wound with both hands. "Apply pressure! Lean on me, Nicholas! We move together!"
Nicholas looked down at the beautiful, fierce woman who was refusing to let him fall, even in the middle of a war zone. A sudden, powerful surge of adrenaline and profound devotion swept through him. He leaned on her, and together, protected by Marcus’s covering fire, they slipped into the secure elevator just as the doors slid shut, sealing them in an impregnable steel vault beneath the earth.
