Chapter 5 - The King Awakens

Three days passed in a blur of clinical monitoring and tense isolation. Claire refused to leave Nicholas’s bedside, managing his antibiotics, adjusting his pain medication infusions, and ensuring his post-operative recovery remained uncompromised. Leo had been given a private guest house on the estate, slowly recovering his nerves by reading through the mansion's vast medical library.
On the fourth morning, the heavy machines monitoring Nicholas’s vital signs began to beep in a faster cadence.
Claire quickly stepped over to the bed, checking his line. As she reached out to adjust the oxygen mask, a large, powerful hand shot up from the sheets, wrapping around her forearm. The grip was firm, electric, and completely conscious.
Nicholas Russo opened his eyes. They were no longer cloudy or desperate; they were a piercing, stormy grey, sharp with intelligence and an undeniable authority.
"Where..." he muttered, his throat dry.
Claire didn't flinch. She placed a gentle, reassuring hand over his chest. "You're at your estate, Mr. Russo. You're safe. We operated on you. You were shot three times, but you're going to survive."
Nicholas stared at her, his gaze scanning her face, tracking the dark circles under her eyes and the calm, professional poise of her posture. The memories of the storm, the trauma bay, and the brave nurse who refused to let him die came rushing back into his mind.
"The nurse from St. Jude's," he said, his voice a low, rough rumble. He slowly released her arm, his fingers brushing against her skin in a lingering gesture. "You stole me from Caldwell."
"I did," Claire said, pouring a glass of water and holding a straw to his lips. "He was going to let you die. I couldn't allow that to happen in my trauma bay."
Nicholas took a few sips of the water, the color slowly returning to his aristocratic, sharp features. A faint, dangerous smile touched his lips. "You ruined a very expensive assassination plot, Nurse Jenkins. Victor Marcone must be losing his mind right now."
"He's not the only one," Claire said, sitting in the chair beside his bed. "Dr. Caldwell has put out a statement claiming that I kidnapped you with the help of a rogue resident, and that we are responsible for your 'disappearance.' The police are looking for us."
Nicholas’s expression turned instantly cold, a terrifying aura of power radiating from him despite his physical weakness. "Let them look. The Chicago PD doesn't enter this property without my permission. And as for Caldwell..." He looked at Marcus, who had just walked into the room. "Marcus. Is the asset secure?"
"We've locked down all of Caldwell's accounts, boss," Marcus reported, bowing his head respectfully. "He tried to flee to the Bahamas yesterday afternoon. My boys intercepted him at the private hangar. He’s currently being held at our warehouse near the docks, waiting for your recovery."
Nicholas nodded slowly, then turned his gaze back to Claire. "You risked your life, your career, and your freedom for a man the newspapers call a monster. Why?"
Claire looked him directly in the eyes, refusing to be intimidated by the King of Chicago. "Because when you were on that table, you weren't a boss, a billionaire, or a criminal. You were a human being whose life was being stolen by a coward. I don't let cowards win in my hospital."
Nicholas stared at her for a long moment, a deep, unreadable emotion flickering behind his stormy eyes. He had been surrounded by sycophants, criminals, and betrayers his entire life. He had never met anyone like Claire—someone completely uncorrupted, incredibly brave, and fiercely loyal to her own moral compass.

"You're a remarkable woman, Claire," Nicholas said softly, using her first name for the first time. "But by saving my life, you've tied your destiny to mine. And in my world, safety is a luxury you have to fight for. Are you ready for what comes next?"
Claire stood up, straightening her scrubs, her jaw set with an iron resolve. "I survived a burning operating room and a hitman, Mr. Russo. I think I can handle whatever you have planned."
