Chapter 6 - The Confession of Dr. Caldwell

The following night, Nicholas insisted on being transferred to a wheelchair, refusing to remain confined to his bed while his empire faced an existential threat. Against Dr. Chen’s protests, Claire accompanied him, acting as his private medical escort as they descended into the mansion’s secure basement level, where an armored elevator took them deeper into an underground bunker beneath the lake cliffs.
The room they entered was small, stark, and illuminated by a single overhead fluorescent bulb. In the center of the room, tied to a heavy steel chair, sat Dr. Harrison Caldwell. The brilliant chief of surgery was completely unrecognizable; his expensive suit was torn, his face was bruised, and he was shaking with an absolute, primitive terror.
When the elevator doors opened and Nicholas Russo was wheeled in by Marcus, with Claire walking right beside him, Caldwell let out a pathetic, choked gasp.
"Nicholas... Claire..." Caldwell stammered, his eyes bulging. "Please... please, you have to understand. I had no choice! Marcone... he was going to kill my daughter. He knew about the debts. He forced my hand!"
Nicholas sat in his wheelchair, his hands folded elegantly over a cashmere blanket. His expression was completely blank—a terrifying mask of pure, absolute detachment.
"You chose the wrong side, Harrison," Nicholas said, his voice quiet, almost conversational, yet it echoed like a death knell in the small room. "You took a bribe to turn your trauma bay into a slaughterhouse. You violated the sanctity of your profession, and more importantly, you tried to execute a Russo."
"I'm sorry! I'll give the money back! I'll testify against Marcone!" Caldwell screamed, looking desperately at Claire. "Claire! Please, talk to him! You're a nurse! You save lives! Don't let him do this to me!"
Claire walked forward, stepping out from behind Nicholas's chair. She looked down at the man who had been her mentor, the man she had once respected as the pinnacle of surgical excellence. She felt no pity—only a profound, burning disgust.
"You don't get to invoke the medical oath now, Dr. Caldwell," Claire said, her voice dripping with an icy disdain. "You abandoned that oath the second you ordered me to stop the blood bags for a dying patient. You didn't care about lives then. You only cared about your own skin."
She turned back to Nicholas. "His vitals are elevated from acute panic, but his heart is strong enough to speak. Make him talk, Nicholas. I want to know exactly how Marcone plans to attack your ports."
Nicholas looked up at her, a dark glint of pure admiration in his eyes. He turned to Marcus. "Bring the documents."
Marcus slammed a thick stack of papers onto Caldwell’s lap. "These are the shipping manifests for the East Side ports that you helped Marcone clear through your connections on the hospital board," Marcus explained. "We know Marcone is using the hospital's charity transport network to smuggle illegal narcotics and illegal firearms into the city undetected. Tell us the arrival times for the next shipment, Harrison, or Marcus will show you exactly what happens to doctors who fail their anatomy exams."
Caldwell looked at the scarred face of Marcus, then at the unyielding, cold eyes of the King of Chicago. He broke completely, sobbing as he spilled every secret, every date, and every coordinate of Victor Marcone’s operations.
When the confession was finished, Nicholas signaled Marcus to take the doctor away.
"What will happen to him?" Claire asked as they rode the elevator back up to the main mansion levels.
"He will be delivered to the federal authorities along with a complete, undeniable record of his financial crimes and his conspiracy with the Marcone syndicate," Nicholas said, looking at her gently. "He will spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security prison. He will never hold a scalpel again. Is that justice enough for you, Claire?"

Claire looked at him, realizing that Nicholas had spared the man’s life simply because he knew she wouldn't want blood on her hands. The ruthless mafia king was changing his methods—just for her.
"Yes," Claire whispered, a sudden, powerful emotion tightening her throat. "That is justice."
