Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of the Vances

The trials that followed dominated the news cycles for three months. The evidence unearthed by Andrew and Vance Kane was insurmountable.

Harrison Vance pleaded guilty to federal corporate fraud and human trafficking charges, receiving a twenty-five-year sentence without the possibility of parole. Victoria Sterling was sentenced to thirty years for her direct role in Clara’s abduction and the arson of Pine Crest Manor.

Eleanor Sterling-Vance, convicted on all counts including attempted murder, was sentenced to life imprisonment in a federal penitentiary, her vast fortune completely seized by the government to pay restitution to the victims of her financial schemes.

With the poisonous elements of the family eradicated, Andrew undertook a massive restructuring of Vance Enterprises. He liquidated the corrupt offshore divisions, returned millions of dollars to the employee pension funds that Harrison had raided, and placed fifty percent of the company’s voting shares into an irrevocable trust for Leo and Toby.

More importantly, Andrew stepped down as Chief Executive Officer, handing the operational reins to a trusted, independent board, choosing instead to take a non-executive role that allowed him to work from home.

Six months after the Regency Hotel gala, the sun rose over a small, picturesque valley in the countryside.

Pine Crest Manor had been rebuilt.

It was no longer a cold, imposing mansion of dark wood and heavy velvet. The new house was built of bright stone, glass, and warm cedar, filled with massive windows that let the sunlight stream into every room. The surrounding gardens were blooming with endless fields of purple lavender and sweet white roses.

Andrew stood on the back porch, leaning against the railing, holding a cup of fresh coffee. The morning air was crisp and clean, smelling of mountain pine and dew.

The back door opened, and Clara stepped out. She wore a simple yellow sundress, her bare feet stepping softly onto the cool wooden deck. She walked up behind Andrew, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her cheek against his back.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.

"I was thinking about the night of the fire," Andrew said turning around in her arms and holding her close. "I spent four years hating this place. I thought my life ended here."

"And now?" Clara looked up at him, her green eyes bright with peace.

"Now, I realize our life didn't end," Andrew said, kissing her softly on the lips. "It was just waiting for us to rebuild it."
