Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Song

The soft golden light of the setting sun spilled through the large bay windows of the master nursery. Outside, the crickets were beginning their evening chorus, and a cool summer breeze rustled the sheer linen curtains.
In the center of the room sat two comfortable twin beds, covered in soft blue quilts.
Leo and Toby, now seven years old, were tucked into their beds, their eyes heavy with sleep after a long day of playing in the new gardens and swimming in the mountain creek.
Andrew sat on the edge of Leo’s bed, while Clara sat on Toby’s, holding her son's small hand in hers.
"Mommy?" Toby whispered, fighting off a yawn.
"Yes, my darling?" Clara asked, stroking his soft brown hair.
"Will you sing it again? The real way?"
Clara looked across the room at Andrew. He smiled, giving her a quiet, loving nod.
Clara took a deep breath. Her voice, once raspy and broken from the smoke of the past, had recovered its warm, rich, melodic tone over months of therapy and rest. It was no longer a desperate whisper from a maid weeping on a cold dining room floor. It was the voice of a mother, whole, safe, and loved.
She began to sing.
“Where the mountain meets the sky, Where the quiet rivers lie, Rest your head, my little one, Till the morning brings the sun. No darkness deep, no shadow long, Can tear you from your mother's song.”
Andrew joined in for the final verse, his deep baritone blending harmoniously with her sweet soprano—the lullaby they had written together six years ago, finally reunited in the room they had built with their own hands.
“Through the fire, through the rain, Love will bring you home again.”
As the last note echoed gently through the room, both boys let out long, peaceful sighs and drifted off into deep, dreamless sleep.
Clara and Andrew stood up quietly, smoothing the blankets over their sons' shoulders. They walked to the doorway, hand in hand, stepping out into the warm, softly lit hallway.
Andrew pulled Clara into his arms, resting his forehead against hers. "I love you, Clara Vance."

"I love you, Andrew," she whispered back, leaning up to kiss him—a kiss filled with the weight of lost years, the victory over dark shadows, and the quiet promise of a thousand peaceful tomorrows.
Behind them, through the open window of the nursery, the night sky was filled with a million brilliant stars, shining brightly over a home that would never know darkness again.
