Chapter 8 - The Velvet Trap

The Grand Ballroom of the Regency Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, tuxedos, and silk gowns. The press line stretched down the block, flashbulbs popping incessantly as senators, CEOs, and old-money aristocrats glided across the red carpet.
The public narrative had been carefully crafted: Andrew Vance was hosting a formal gala to announce the restructuring of Vance Enterprises and celebrate the miraculous return of his wife, Clara.
Standing near the grand mahogany staircase, holding a glass of champagne, was Eleanor Sterling-Vance. At sixty-eight, she looked regal in an emerald velvet gown, her white hair styled immaculately, her neck adorned with three strands of rare South Sea pearls. Her expression was one of calm, serene grace, but her eyes were sharp, scanning the crowd like a bird of prey.
"Eleanor, darling!" a wealthy socialite cooed, stepping up beside her. "Isn't it simply astonishing? Clara alive after all these years! It's like a miracle from a novel!"
"It is indeed a blessing," Eleanor said, her voice smooth and dripping with artificial sweetness. "Our family has suffered so much grief. To have dear Clara back... it fills my heart with joy."
"Does it, Aunt Eleanor?"
The voice echoed softly from the top of the grand staircase.
The chatter in the ballroom began to die down as guests turned to look up.
Andrew stood at the landing, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. Beside him stood Clara.
She was breathless. She wore a stunning white silk gown that clung gracefully to her frame, her brown hair cascading in soft waves over her shoulders. Around her neck was the sapphire pendant her father had given her on her wedding day—the pendant Eleanor had claimed was "lost in the fire."
Beside Clara stood their twins, Leo and Toby, dressed in matching miniature tuxedos, holding their mother's hands with bright, happy smiles.
The flashbulbs erupted into a blinding storm of light.
Eleanor’s hand tightened around her champagne glass until the thin stem cracked. Her sweet expression froze, turning into a mask of stone.
Andrew took the microphone offered by the hotel master of ceremonies. His voice echoed clearly through the massive speakers, carrying over the silence that had fallen across the five hundred guests.
"Thank you all for coming tonight," Andrew said, his arm wrapped securely around Clara’s waist. "Four years ago, my family was torn apart by tragedy. I believed I had lost the love of my life to a terrible accident. But as the truth has revealed itself over the past weeks... it wasn't an accident. It was a crime born of unimaginable greed."
A quiet murmur washed through the crowd. Journalists leaned forward, holding up their recording devices.
"Many people believed that Vance Enterprises was built on the strength of corporate mergers," Andrew continued, his eyes locking onto Eleanor near the staircase. "But the truth is, the foundation of this family was built on honor, integrity, and love. Qualities that some members of our own bloodline tried to extinguish."
Clara stepped forward, taking the microphone from Andrew. She looked directly down at Eleanor.
"Four years ago, Aunt Eleanor," Clara’s voice rang out, clear, strong, and completely devoid of fear, "you told your daughter that ghosts stay buried. You paid to have my home burned. You paid to have me hidden in an asylum. You tried to poison my tea two days ago."
Gasps of horror erupted across the ballroom. Guests backed away from Eleanor, leaving her standing alone in a wide circle on the polished marble floor.
"You're hysterical!" Eleanor hissed, her regal composure finally cracking as she pointed a gloved finger at Clara. "She’s delusional! The trauma has ruined her mind! Security, remove this woman!"
"The security is mine, Eleanor," Andrew said coldly.
The heavy brass doors at the rear of the ballroom swung open. Eight federal agents, led by the Chief District Attorney, marched down the center aisle.
"Eleanor Sterling-Vance," the Attorney announced, unfolding a federal warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and the attempted poisoning of Clara Vance. You have the right to remain silent."
Eleanor looked around frantically, but her high-society friends turned their backs on her, stepping away in disgust. As the steel handcuffs clicked around her delicate wrists, she looked up at Clara with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You should have died in that fire," Eleanor spat through her teeth.
Clara looked down at her, her expression filled not with anger, but with a quiet, profound pity. "Fire purifies things, Aunt Eleanor. It destroyed your lies... but it only made my family stronger."
