Chapter 3 - The Ghost at the Shipyard

The industrial district was a skeletal landscape of rusted cranes and decaying warehouses, a graveyard for the city’s ambition. Evelyn’s sedan crunched over gravel, the headlights carving hollow tunnels through the fog. Every shadow looked like a gunman; every rustle of the wind sounded like a silencer.
"Stay down," Evelyn commanded. Leo obeyed without a word, his small frame pressed against the floorboards.
Evelyn stepped out, the cold, salt-tinged air stinging her lungs. She looked like an apparition in her torn designer gown, a fallen queen entering the ruins. A figure emerged from behind a shipping container—Julian Vane, a man whose career she had personally dismantled three years ago for digging too deep into her firm’s offshore accounts.
"Evelyn Sterling," Vane chuckled, a sound like grinding metal. "I never thought I’d see the day the Ice Queen lost her cool."
"Save the lecture, Vane," she snapped, stepping into the dim light. She held out the envelope. "They’ve been using me as a laundering machine for fifteen years. They took my son, they faked a death, and they’ve been holding the leash the entire time. I have the ledger. I have the names."
Vane’s eyes widened as he scanned the documents. His smugness evaporated, replaced by a chilling professional focus. "If this is real, Evelyn, you’re dead before sunrise. The Syndicate doesn't just silence people; they erase them from history."
"I’m already erased," she said, glancing back at the car where Leo waited. "I want them burned. Everything. The board, the politicians, the shadow investors. Use your network. Leak it all."
"Why the change of heart?" Vane asked, his voice low.
"Because I finally looked at the face they tried to hide from me," she replied, her voice steadying. "And I realized that for the first time, I have something worth dying for."

Just as Vane reached for his own phone to start the upload, a high-frequency whistle pierced the air. A sniper’s bullet shattered the windshield of the sedan.
"Get down!" Evelyn tackled Vane behind a stack of crates just as a black SUV roared into the yard, lights blinding.
