Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Months later, the dust had settled. The Syndicate was a hollowed-out shell, its members behind bars. Evelyn had served her time, a fraction of what she deserved, according to some, but it was enough.
She sat on a porch, the air smelling of pine and sea salt. It was a modest life, far from the skyscrapers and the glitz of the city.
Leo sat beside her, sketching in a notebook. He was growing up, the trauma of his past slowly being replaced by the mundane joys of a normal life.
Evelyn set her book down and looked out at the ocean. She had no empire, no title, and no power over anyone but herself.
"Are you happy?" Leo asked, looking up from his drawing.
Evelyn watched the waves roll in, relentless and free. She thought of the woman in the black sedan, the one who thought she owned the world. She smiled, and it was a real, genuine thing.

"For the first time in my life," she said, pulling him close, "I'm not waiting for anything. I'm just living."
The story had begun in a puddle of muddy water, but it ended in the light of a new day. They were finally, completely, free.
