Chapter 7 - The Trial of Hearts

The next three weeks were a trial by fire.

The war between Julian and his family spilled out into the public eye. Newspapers ran daily headlines about the "Billionaire and the Maid," while paparazzi camped outside the wrought-iron gates of Hartwell Estate.

Inside the house, however, a quiet transformation was taking place.

Julian moved his office entirely from the corporate headquarters down to Hartwell House. He spent his mornings working from his study, but his afternoons were spent in the gardens with Ivy and Mara.

For the first time in his life, the cold, distant billionaire was learning how to be a father.

Mara watched from the garden terrace as Julian—the man who commanded thousands of employees—sat on the grass in a thousand-dollar suit, letting three-year-old Ivy place plastic flower crowns on his head while she giggled hysterically.

"He's good with her," a soft voice spoke beside her.

Mara turned to see Mr. Henderson, the old butler who had served the Hartwell family for forty years, standing on the terrace holding a tray of afternoon tea.

"I’ve never seen Mr. Julian smile like that," Mr. Henderson said gently, setting the tray down on the wrought-iron table. "Not even when he was a boy. His father was a hard man, Mrs. Ellis. He taught Julian that feelings were weaknesses. You and little Ivy... you gave him his heart back."

Mara looked at Julian, who was currently letting Ivy pull on his silk tie while he pretended to be a roaring lion. A warm, sweet ache bloomed in Mara’s chest—a feeling she had fought desperately to suppress for four years.

She was falling in love with him. Not with "Jay" the mysterious stranger in the cabin, but with Julian the father, the protector, the man who was willing to burn his own empire to keep her and her daughter safe.

Later that evening, after Ivy was fast asleep in her nursery, Julian invited Mara to the roof observatory—a glass-domed room at the highest point of Hartwell House that looked out over the starry night sky.

A small table was set with fresh candles, fruit, and wine.

Mara walked over to the glass wall, looking out at the city lights glowing in the valley below. "It feels so peaceful up here."

Julian walked up behind her. He didn't touch her, but his closeness radiated a comforting warmth that made her skin tingle.

"I used to come up here when the pressure got too heavy," Julian said softly. "I thought money and power could buy peace. But peace isn't a place, Mara."

He reached out, his long fingers gently gently brushing a strand of dark hair away from her neck.

"Peace is a person," Julian whispered.

Mara turned around slowly, her grey eyes meeting his dark, intense gaze beneath the moonlight. "Julian..."

"I love you, Mara," Julian said quietly, the words simple, unadorned, and terrifyingly powerful. "I loved the brave girl who saved me in the snow four years ago. And I love the fierce, beautiful woman standing in front of me tonight. I don't care about the board. I don't care about Eleanor or the press. I just want you. You and Ivy. Forever."

Mara’s breath trembled. "Julian... what about the trial? What about your family? They will never stop fighting us."

Julian pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket—not the old box with the silver chain, but a new one.

May you like

He opened it. Inside sat a magnificent ring—a flawless yellow diamond shaped like a blooming flower, surrounded by small carved silver hummingbirds.

"Let them fight," Julian said, dropping to one knee before her, holding the ring up toward the stars. "Mara Ellis... will you make me the happiest man alive? Will you marry me?"
