Chapter 3 - The Lies We Live In

"Why didn't you tell me?"
Julian’s question hung in the quiet air of the study like a heavy curtain.
Mara looked down at her lap, watching Ivy trace the stitched seams of her velvet rabbit. The truth was a terrifying, tangled thread, and if she pulled it, everything she had built to protect her daughter would unravel.
"Because you were Julian Hartwell," Mara said softly, her voice barely a whisper. "And I was nobody."
"That is not an answer, Mara," Julian said, his hands coming up to rest gently on the arms of her chair, effectively holding her in place. "I woke up in a private hospital in Zurich three weeks after that crash. My family told me I was alone. They told me the charm on my neck was something I bought in Paris. When I finally remembered the woman in the cabin, I tried to find you. If you knew who I was... why didn't you come forward?"
Mara met his gaze finally, her grey eyes filling with unshed tears. "Because three weeks after that night in the cabin, I realized I was pregnant."
Julian went completely still.
The silence in the study became absolute. The clock on the mantle seemed to stop ticking.
"What did you say?" Julian breathed, his voice trembling so violently he could barely articulate the words.
"I didn't know who you were that night," Mara wept silently, the secret she had carried in total isolation for three agonizing years finally bursting free. "You didn't tell me your name. You just called yourself 'Jay.' You were hurt, freezing, delirious from fever. We... we held each other because we thought we were going to freeze to death in that cabin. It was one night, Julian."
Julian looked slowly down at Ivy.
The little girl was looking back at him with big, bright hazel eyes—eyes that were the exact shape, color, and shade of his own. Eyes he had looked at in the mirror every single morning of his life.
"Ivy..." Julian whispered, his hand reaching out, his fingers shaking as he lightly touched the little girl’s soft, golden-brown curls.
"When I saw your picture in the newspaper six months later," Mara continued, her voice shaking with sorrow, "announcing your return to Hartwell Enterprises, I realized who 'Jay' was. A billionaire industrialist. A man whose family controls half the shipping lines in the country. A man whose world is filled with predators, lawyers, and ruthless politics."
"So you hid," Julian realized, a deep, agonizing pain settling into his chest.
"I was terrified," Mara confessed. "I knew your family would think I was a blackmailer. I knew they would take my baby away from me. I had no money, no lawyer, no family. So I took a job as a maid under my middle name, saved every penny, and stayed in the shadows. I only took the job at Hartwell House four months ago because Ivy was sick, and I needed the higher wage to pay her medical bills."
"Ivy is my daughter," Julian whispered, the reality crashing into him like a tidal wave. "She's my daughter."
Before Mara could answer, the heavy oak doors of the study were thrown open.
Camille Rourke stood in the threshold, flanked by two security guards and Julian’s personal assistant, Marcus. Camille held a smartphone in her hand, her face twisted in triumphant malice.
"I knew it!" Camille shrieked, pointing her long, diamond-encrusted fingernail at Mara. "I knew she was a scam artist! Julian, I just called the employment agency. Her background references are forged! She’s a fraud!"
Julian stood up slowly from his knees. He turned around to face Camille, his face transforming into a mask of pure, terrifying fury.
"Get out," Julian said in a low, murderous quiet.
"Julian, listen to me!" Camille demanded, stepping into the room. "She forged her papers! She’s trying to extort you! I saw you kneeling in front of her—she's setting a trap!"
"Marcus," Julian commanded, his dark eyes never leaving Camille.
"Yes, Mr. Hartwell?" his assistant answered nervously from the hall.
"Cancel the engagement announcement in the Times," Julian ordered, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "Call my personal legal team. Terminate the merger agreement with Rourke Development immediately. And have Miss Rourke’s belongings removed from my property within twenty minutes."

Camille froze, the phone slipping slightly in her hand. "You... you're breaking our engagement? For a maid?!"
"She is not a maid," Julian said, walking over to stand squarely between Camille and the chair where Mara and Ivy sat. "She is the woman who saved my life. And that child is a Hartwell."
