Chapter 4 - The War for Hartwell House

The news of the broken engagement sent shockwaves through the upper echelons of high society by nightfall.

Camille Rourke did not go quietly. By 8:00 PM, her father, Richard Rourke—a ruthless real estate tycoon with deep political connections—had arrived at the gates of Hartwell House with three black limousines and a squad of private security personnel.

Inside the grand dining room, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Julian sat at the head of the long polished table. Mara sat beside him, dressed no longer in her maid’s apron, but in a simple, elegant dark green dress that Julian’s staff had brought down from the guest suites. Ivy was sitting in a high chair beside her mother, happily eating fresh peach slices provided by the head chef, completely unaware of the storm brewing around her.

The dining room doors burst open, and Richard Rourke stormed in, his face red with anger, followed closely by Camille, who was weeping dramatically.

"Hartwell!" Richard roared, slamming his heavy fist onto the mahogany table, making the crystal stemware ring. "What is the meaning of this insult?! You throw my daughter out of your house like a dog over some low-class servant's lies?!"

Julian didn't even lift his wine glass. He took a slow sip, set it down carefully on his napkin, and looked at Richard Rourke with icy contempt.

"Your daughter threatened a three-year-old child in my foyer, Richard," Julian said calmly. "And she insulted the mother of my child."

Richard blinked, stunned for a fraction of a second, before turning his furious glare onto Mara. "A child? You honestly believe this girl's ridiculous story? She’s an opportunist! She targeted you!"

"I took a DNA sample from Ivy four hours ago," Julian stated, gesturing toward Marcus, who stood near the sideboard holding a sealed envelope from the state medical laboratory. "The expedited results arrived thirty minutes ago. Ivy is my biological daughter. Her legal recognition as a Hartwell heir was filed with the state court at 6:00 PM."

Camille gasped, her face going completely white. "Julian... no..."

"Which means," Julian continued, standing up and leaning over the table, his presence suffocatingly dominant, "that any threat made against Mara or Ivy is a direct attack on Hartwell Enterprises."

Richard Rourke’s jaw tightened. He was a veteran of brutal corporate warfare, and he knew when he had lost a position—but his pride was too vast to yield quietly.

"You think you can just break our merger agreement, Hartwell?" Richard threatened, his voice dropping into a rasp. "Rourke Development holds forty percent of the land permits for your new maritime terminal. If you walk away from Camille, I will pull those permits tomorrow. I will tie your project up in litigation for ten years! I will bankrupt your expansion!"

Mara felt a sudden spike of fear. She reached out under the table, catching the edge of Julian’s jacket. "Julian... no. Don't ruin your company for us. We can leave—"

Julian reached down and took Mara’s hand in his, squeezing it tightly, his fingers warm and reassuring.

"Let him try," Julian said, glaring straight at Richard Rourke. "Marcus, present Mr. Rourke with Document B."

Marcus stepped forward and slid a heavy grey folder across the table toward Richard.

Richard frowned, opening the folder reluctantly. As his eyes scanned the first few pages, the color completely drained from his face. His hands began to shake violently.

"What... what is this?" Richard stammered, his voice suddenly losing all its booming authority.

"That," Julian explained smoothly, "is a complete forensic audit of Rourke Development’s offshore accounts in Panama. It details twelve years of tax evasion, bribe payments to city permit officials, and structural corner-cutting on your downtown high-rises."

"Where did you get this?!" Richard yelled, his voice cracking with panic.

"I’ve had it for six months, Richard," Julian revealed, a dark, dangerous smile playing on his lips. "I only kept the engagement with your daughter because I was waiting for you to complete the land transfer. But since your daughter decided to throw my child into the street... I decided to use it early."

Julian pointed toward the grand exit.

"You and your daughter have ten seconds to leave my estate," Julian commanded softly. "If you ever come near Mara or Ivy again, those files go directly to the Federal Prosecutor’s office before sunrise."

Richard Rourke stared at Julian in absolute terror. He grabbed Camille by her arm, dragging his sobbing, hysterical daughter out of the dining room without another word.
